Mouse and CRC error

Although I am far from a new user, this has me stumped. I have a brand new Fujitsu laptop using XP/SP2 and cannot get any type of external (USB) mouse to install properly. Each time I plug the mouse in for Windows to recognize it produces the same "CRC" message (cyclic redundancy error).

Now I can install the drivers manually (via a USB flash card) for both a Kensington Pocket Mouse and a MS Wireless Mouse with no problems, but the laptop will not recognize or use the mouse (the trackpad works fine). Other USB devices (e.g., external hard drive and flash cards) appear to work fine. I have tried running chkdsk on the hard drive (two files had bad sectors) but otherwise no problems.

Any suggestions would be most helpful.
