I did a clean re-install of Windows 8.1 as I had numerous problems due to malware, etc.
After installing Windows(no problem) I started to install my software, and often had to restart my PC.
After one of these restarts, the mouse and keyboard did not work. I replaced the batteries (it is a wireless Microsoft mouse(MS Wireless Mouse 1000; Model 1454) and keyboard(MS Wireless Keyboard 800;Model 1455))-this in the past has often been the problem. No luck.
I then tried another wired mouse and keyboard, which also did not work. I took it to my technician. He used his own mouse and keyboard, which worked, but at home the same sage continued.
I searched the internet, but mostly the answers were aimed as if you have a mouse and keyboard-click on this; open command prompt; etc.
I am making no progress. I suspect that the drivers need to be updated, but this is just a guess. I do not know how to update drivers without a mouse and keyboard, open bios and fix this. I have now spent hours researching the subject and trying various options.
I really need help. This is my holiday and I planned to edit long outstanding videos.
    The specs:
    Windows 8.1 64 bit;500; 500;2 TB HHD's
Intel Core i5-2300 CPU; 2.8 GHz; 8 GB RAM
    Motherboard: MSI H61M-P21(B3)

I cannot for sure say that the USB "receiver" stick for the mouse and keyboard (the two were bought as a set and has one wireless USB stick) was plugged in from the start of the installation, most probably, but definitely when one needs to change the country, insert the key number, etc.

This I cannot say, as I haven't used the wired one on that PC for ages. I know the device is working, as it is working on my laptop.

The USB ports were all working prior to the installation. I haven't tried now with other memory sticks.

Please note that everything was working fine after the installation of Windows, as I started installing quite a few programs before the mouse and keyboard stopped working after a restart.

Regarding internet access, as I am not at home, I am not using a LAN cable which I usually do. I use a data stick. This stick was not connected at all, so there has been no internet connection when I installed Windows (perhaps needed for updating drivers??).

If there are no relatively easy solutions, I will rather re-install, but then one needs to know that the same thing will not happen again.

I read somewhere that if the motherboard is a MSI, one should install "clickbios2_mb" to try and fix this problem. The question again is how.

These are 2 possible solutions that I saw, but I do not know how to get into bios without a mouse and keyboard:

    Thanks for your reply.
As it is evening here in South Africa, I would only be able to get one in the morning.
I was just thinking- I have the connecting devices to connect that HDD to my laptop and therefore see it as an external, but that would not solve the problem to identify the problem. Unless perhaps if I install this ClickBiosII on the drive??? I would also be able to boot from the external (but that might create a conflicting situation, unless I remove the HDD from the laptop) Just thinking out loud!

Then I will just need to wait until tomorrow. I will keep you posted.

I have re-installed Windows 8.1.The Microsoft keyboard and mouse still did not work after this installation. I took it to the technician again and bought a wired mouse and keyboard. Now the system was working very well. I installed all my programs, editing videos, etc.
Two nights ago there was a Windows Update-must have been a big one as it took quite a while to install.
Now, only the mouse does not work. I tried 2 other pairs of keyboards and mice- keyboards working; mice not. (I cannot see the mouse pointer and nothing happens when I click the mouse)
I then downloaded all updates for the MSI drivers with another PC, but I am totally clueless how to install them without a mouse. I looked up all possible keyboard shortcuts, but for me this is a job to even get to a folder, left alone opening and install them.
    So, my queries:
    1. The drivers need to be updated, I know. If it will solve the issue, I do not know.
    2. Any other possibilities?
But first if someone can guide me how to install the drivers without a mouse, which are currently on a USB stick. (Often in forums the question would be that the mouse does not work, but the answer would still refer to a mouse as if it is working)

Thanks for your response. I turned MouseKeys on (I entered yes when the message appeared on the screen), but there is no mouse pointer showing on the screen. I have searched the internet, but will search more now.
If I changed the memory stick to a bootable one, wouldn't I be able to install the MSI updates?

There wont be. MouseKeys allow you to use the arrow keys to navigate Windows.
Tip: Also use the Tab key.
Whithout MouseKeys turned on, I managed to get into Device Manager and check the USB drivers.
