    have a dell latitude D800
usb mouse started wandering around my screen, sometimes would stop and go where I wanted, but more often it would keep running away so I could direct it anywhere. Sometimes it would go to lower left corner over start, others to upper right corner and sometimes just keep moving around the screen.

    Tried;
different mouse, mouse controls to set modes, uninstalled mouse and reinstalled, always goes back to behavior above. use mice that wander on another computer and have no problem.

    help! Mike

Hi, I know nothing about computers, but thought I'd share this...

With my cordless optical mouse, the cursor would move on it's on, wherever the heck it wanted, sometimes it roamed the screen, other times it would just jump... whether or not I was using it, or sat idle on desk.

Solution: A plain black or dark coloured design mousepad.

Its not the mouse its the touch pad that's at fault.

    Try the following

    start>control panel>system>device manager

click on the + i the square to the left of 'Mice and other pointing devices'
    double click on Alps touchpad
    choose advanced settings
in the Wheel detection box choose detection disabled.

Let us know if this helps.

    Hi

Thanks for taking the time to help. I did as you suggested and there was no Alps touchpad option under the mice and other etc option. just the p/2 and mx300 for Logitech mx300 digital usb mouse.

Went to Dell to get an Alps driver but referred me to installation cd. bought this laptop used & did not have an installation cd....any suggestions?T

    Thanks again, Mike

Did those drivers help? Fix it?
I had the same problem with a touch pad. In the end completely disabling the touch pad fixed the problem.
Device manager > Mice and other pointing > disable any but HID- compliant mouse or Logitech mx300 digital usb mouse
at least your pointer will stop moving.

I thank you so much. It did work. Once the Alps driver was installed I went to mouse icon in the control panel and the Alps set up program appears. There is an option on one of the choice headings pages to disable the touchpad when using a usb mouse. That works great. When I unplug the mouse, the mousepad automatically works.

Thanks again to whoever you are, Mike Jackson

I would also like to say that this is an amazing Forum. Every problem I have run into, including a crashed,as in Kerplunk, hard drive, one of you folks has taken the time to help me. I thank you all.
