After login and operating (using usb mouse) for period of time, laptop mouse cursor disappears and laptop (and touch pad) freezes... need to shut off PC with power switch to reboot.

Happens only occasionally, and started only a few weeks ago.

Not able to link directly to any particular program.

Closest association may be to 'POP Peeper' multi account email client installed around same time as problem started.

Any ideas, or other places to look for help ?

Disconnect the USB mouse and operate it for awhile using just the touchpad. (I know it is asking a lot because I always attach a mouse to a laptop) and see if the same behavior occurs. If not, it might mean that the USB port goes to sleep; though why the cursor disappears seems unusual.

I've had problems using a USB mouse on one of my laptops so I switched to a PS/2 and haven't had a problem. (If no PS/2 port on your laptop, then it rules out 1 source of a possible problem).

Here's another idea that I've been proposing for a while to see where it works and where it doesn't, mostly to fix USB problems on laptops.
Disconnect the power supply and the battery, press and hold the 'on' button for 30 seconds, then reconnect the battery and power supply.
