Mouse is going nuts!

I don't really know what happened between 4 PM and 6PM, but my mouse decided to start having a mind of its own. As I am typing, my mouse is moving by itself and also clicking on random things, making it hard for me to type this post. I thought it might have been a virus or a trojan, but I ran all the scans (Spybot S&D, HijackThis, and Symnatec Antivirus) and nothing came up and I couldn't find anything strange or unusual in the logs.

Now, the worse part is, I tried to unplug my mouse and replug it in to see if it was a problem with the mouse. Once I unplugged it, the cursor started moving on its own and clicking on things before i even plugged it back in!

The mouse is a logitech, MX518 mouse, approximately 10 months old. Should i post the HijackThis log? Or is this a software problem? Please help! I'm at my wits end!

Disconnect from the internet - if you are on broadband, pull the cable from computer going to the modem or the router. If you are on dialup, pull the phone card out of the wall or the computer. It almost sounds like someone has remote desktop working and is controlling your computer. If the mouse behaves, then it might be remote desktop.

I actually did try that. The first time that I had unplugged it, I thought that it stopped. I restarted my computer and then... I decided that it was working again... but as soon as i plugged in the internet, my mouse went nuts again. But then, i unplugged it and it was STILL moving on its own...

I thought it might be remote desktop, but i have that function disabled....

The next logical step is to try another mouse.

    Unplugged what?
    The mouse or the internet?

If you unplugged the mouse it would make no difference to Remote Control. (mouse moving on its own)

If you unplugged the internet and it still moved its probably the mouse.

Well I unplugged the mouse + the internet...

i just went through a reformat... which is why I haven't visited in awhile.

    Here are my updates:
I unplug the mouse + internet = still move
Unplug the mouse + move it to another port = still move
Unplug the mouse + put in another mouse = still move

Anyone got any solutions? I've also ran antivirus scans + multiple spyware scans

Thank you for your prompt response...

however, if you look at the thread in malware removal, I have already tried all those steps (and attached the logs for each step involved), but I have also reformatted my computer.

The problem is still present... So I am thinking it is either a hardware problem (Mouse, keyboard, maybe mobo?) or it is a software problem (Setpoint --> Logitech drivers for my mouse and keyboard).

A little background on this system:
    3.0 Ghz Intel P4
    3 GB Ram
    300 GB HD
    Logitech MX518 Mouse
Logitech LX700 Wireless Keyboard/Mouse combo (Keyboard Only)

I think the problem exists where my computer is conflicted by setpoint between accessing drivers for the Keyboard/Mouse instead of my MX518... I'll look into it... For now, I have uninstalled Setpoint... but like I said in my other thread, during the reformat process, after formatting, when I was reinstalling windows, I still had the mouse moving around! Oh, and the internet was off at the time... so no remote desktop function could have been using my computer...

Thank you very much though! I will update this since I seemed to have seen many forums without any designated answers...

I know you are not using a wireless mouse, but you do mention a wireless keyboard. It is possible you are getting some interference from another wireless device which is causing your computer to think it has a wireless mouse? Are there any other wireless devices nearby? Cordless phone? Wireless router? Another user with a wireless mouse?

Generally you should only see interference from other wireless mice or keyboards. The other stuff uses a different range of signal.

    Hey Jamiko!

Thanks for your suggestion; however, I know about wireless frequencies being interfered... I used a security function on my logitech keyboard to ensure that my frequency wouldn't be interfered with. I don't usually keep my cellphone next to my desk (since I have speakers and you know how they are) and my neighbor just moved in but I'm sure she has a laptop that is not using any wireless connections in this area.

My apartment complex provides free internet from the college servers provided that you have an ethernet card and cable... It is impossible, however, to run a router/wireless router... I don't think that's really an issue... What I do think is that perhaps my wireless keyboard's time was up! And it just needed to be replaced which is what I have done since I posted... There have been no problems with my computer since I uninstalled Setpoint and switched my keyboard... But the last time after reformatting, my devices appeared to be working properly, but in reality it was a temporary solution...

For now, I will try to go without Setpoint as well as go with this new keyboard that I've bought!

Thanks again for your suggestion and I hope this is the resolution to the problem... Though, it would be nice to be able to use all the functions of my new logitech keyboard with the Setpoint stuff installed!

Are you using the latest version of SetPoint? Looks like 4.24 is the current version.

Yes, I was using the newest version of Setpoint (of course I reinstalled the mouse drivers, and rebooted, etc.) and it still moved...

I am starting to think it was an issue with my Wireless Desktop recognizing the mouse as a wireless mouse instead of my wired MX518...

Weird, I know, but it seems stable... I also thought that it could have been my keyboard just acting up since it was old... so I changed my keyboard to a new wireless one... and nothing has really happened since... Perhaps my old keyboard was just signaling to me that it was definitely time for it to make its exit...

    So here's my setup now:
New Wireless Keyboard (MX3000 Wireless Desktop)
MX518 Mouse (The one I thought was broken)
+ No Setpoint, using Microsoft's own default drivers
