The mouse on my computer occasionally just freezes and the only thing that gets it back is restarting the computer. It's connected via the normal slot in the back of the computer. Any ideas?

First troubleshooting step is to try another mouse.

There are lots of normal slots on the back of computers. Is it a PS/2 (round) or a USB (rectangular) slot?

It is a PS/2 connection. I have also tried it with a wireless USB mouse and it has the same problem. It doesn't do it very often. It is usually after it has been on sleep for a while, when it comes back on the mouse is frozen. Everything else works fine I can still access the start menu. Running a scan now

    MrMajeika...

Yes, just download the .iso and burn it straight to a CD. Once it's burned, just place it in your main CD/DVD drive and boot/reboot, and you will be at the menu.

Memtest 86+ is easy to run. Just start it from the initial menu of tools and let it run for 5 hours+. I have seen it mentioned that it's best to run it 12-14 hours, which would obviously be overnight.

Select the miniXP choice on the main menu to access all of the tools. Here is a list of the tools:

    http://www.hiren.info/pages/bootcd

Sorry, I don't know much about the hard drive tests. I have only used a generic hard drive test in Hiren's...I think it's called HDD Scan. In the list above, to see the Hard Drive tools, scroll down to the Hard Disk Tools header. From the drive code you posted, you have a Western Digital HD, so you can try the Western Digital hard drive tools first. However, I have read that some didn't have luck with them and couldn't get them to run on their WD drive. There are many available on Hiren's however, including generic ones like the one I have used.

NOTE: Just a word of caution. There are drive formatting tools on Hiren's that will wipe your hard drive, and they are in the same category of tools with the test software. Post here the tool you will be running before you run it to be on the safe side.

Ok thanks, what will happen when i have run it, can i post the results on here. Will it help me to fix the problem with the mouse? I don't want to have to do any physical repairs as i don't know what i am doing. What might the repairs be if there is something wrong

    Mr.Majeika...

The repairs would be replacing RAM memory or a hard drive if necessary. Someone here can likely help you with that if you need help.

The tests won't directly affect the mouse situation. It's tied to another problem and hopefully the tests will help diagnose the deeper cause of the mouse problem. One thing here...you will never regret making this disk. A boot rescue disk is worth its weight in gold...practically irreplaceable.

Before worrying about results and posting them, look around in the miniXP dialog after you run Memtest 86+. Just make a note of the results of the Memtest memory test and put them in a notepad for reference. Then in miniXP look over the hard drive tools and make a list of the ones that look useful to you (for testing the health of the hard drive). Then post in this thread here at MajorGeeks the Memtest results and the list of hard drive programs that look good to you to get some responses on which one(s) to use. Only run Memtest for now, until you have advice from here on which program to use for the hard drive scan...

ok i have downloaded hirens bootcd.zip.

is it the highlighted .iso file in the attachment that goes on to the disk?

do i just extract that to the desktop and burn the whole file to cd?

thanks and sorry for being dim :)

OK...yes, just extract the zip to the desktop or a remote drive if you would like to place the files there and then simply burn the .iso to disk...

Let me add that when you burn the .iso use the slowest speed. 1x or 2x (I forget which is the slowest with Imgburn) is the best speed when burning an .iso because from experience burning the .iso too fast results in a useless cd.

Sorry for my delay , you need the code because in hiren's cd there is a lot of tools to test your hdd , one of them is the
Western Digital Data Lifeguard Tools 11.2
your hdd is WDC ( Western Digital ;) ) :wave

ok so am i running memtest or western digital data lifeguard tools. which one do i select to run

  17. AtlBo

    AtlBo Major Geek Extraordinaire

The hard drive test only takes minutes (less than an hour), so I recommend running it first...

If your main drive is healthy, then you can run Memtest86+...

I ran the hdd test and it was fine then i let memtest86+ run overnight and there were no errors. What else can i do

You may want to try this out. It works for me.

    • Go to --Control Panel( select)--Power Options
    • Depending on which power plan you're in, either 'Balance' or 'Power Saver', select the -->Change plan settings-- accordingly
    • Select --Change advanced power settings-- and expand -- settings --by clicking on the <+> sign
    • Expand further the --USB selective suspend setting --- by clicking on the ---<+> sign
    • Set both --On battery-- & (Plugged in) to 'Disabled' and click 'Apply'

    Hope this is helpful.

Thanks for the advice Edward Smith but i am using a windows XP desktop computer and i believe the settings that you have said are not available. I think the settings you gave are for windows 7. Anyone else have any advice to this frustrating problem?
