    Hello people!

I'm having this issue with my computer, and it's driving me crazy.

Not much with my computer, but with my USB mouse. Now, this mouse is a bottom shelf Dell mouse. Nothing fancy, just plain and dull. Although the computer was recently bought, I still used the mouse for almost 2 months with no issue until last week till now.

The mouse keeps turning on and off and I know this for 2 apparent reasons:

    - The red laser under the mouse flashes on and off, thus the pointer does not move for a couple of seconds until the red laser turns back on.
    - Windows produces the USB disconnect sound whenever this happens.

I've read through various websites and every solution I've seen, does not work.
    Here's what I've tried:

    - Swapped USB connection.
    - Went to Device manager and on the USB root drop down, and disabled the option that lets the computer turn off the USB to save power under each USB root properties.
    - Went to Power Management's advanced options and disabled the option that lets the computer turn off the USB to save power.

Nothing seems to work, which leads me to believe it's something else other than the mouse that's causing a conflict. I'm not sure, which is why I'm resorting to this forum.

Here's my PC specs just in case:

    AMD FX 8core 4.0Ghz
    2x8GB Vengeance DDR3
    Asus R9 270 OC Edition 2GB DDR5 1028 cores
    Gigabyte 990FX-A UD3
    2TB internal + 2TB external HDD
    Edirol UA-25 external sound card
    850w PSU

    Any ideas?
    Cheers

    Idea #1. Replace the mouse.

I'm not sure why you draw this "something else other than mouse" conclusion.

I am in the "replace the mouse" camp. All of mine became flakey at the end of their lives and, like you, I often use low-end Dells, Logitechs, MS.

I'd have left the USB settings as is, especially since you've got an external drive.

You've got a USB keyboard, too, yes? Not wireless? Is it flakey? Is the external drive flakey? If those aren't, then I go back to my original curiousity - "Why suspect something more than the mouse, the one flakey-performer?"

The only apparent reason is it is DEAD.:-D

Here's one that I use - don't expect any mouse to last forever.

Opticals are good because you don't need a solid surface.
Great for surfing Internet from PS3 and using the arm of the couch.

I usually buy a couple at a time - always good to keep a spare.:wave

So a few months old mouse is dead just like that? I find it highly improbable. Especially when this issue occurs constantly while I'm gaming, and not so much when browsing the internet and non existing when I browse through the folders and windows OS or when idle.

Why did I think it could be something else causing this conflict? As I said, I have no idea but I've troubleshot through everything mouse related and nothing. I've read somewhere that outdated High Def Audio driver could cause the mouse to turn on/off, so here's a reason why I believe it could be something else causing this annoying thing. Unfortunately that did not work for me.

Anyway, please refrain from any comments suggesting a new mouse, I've thought about that but I just don't want to replace a 3 month old mouse when it was working perfectly fine until last week.

    Thanks

GPS, I'd re-argue this point because there are zero real-world guarantees on product life-cycles. One day's supplies for parts can be different from another day's supplies, and therefore products may not be "exactly the same" or the same quality. The ability for handling and shipping jostles to misalign a critical part exist for just about all electronics.

No manufacturer is immune, no product line is, either.

That said, your introduction of a new piece to the puzzle ("this occurs during gaming, not Internet surfing") does make "drivers" take on a more reasoned view.

I'd swap to another mouse - a completely different mouse - and see if behavior changes. Otherwise, you've got Video Drivers and Printer Driver issues (these two combine to create and present Colors, Object Shapes, Fonts), then you've got Audio vs Video Driver possibilities, too.

Any of these might be bad OR they may be installed and/or loading in a sequence that, well, "isn't optimal", let's say.

If your motherboard has USB Boost drivers, that too introduces another layer of possibilities, not just "Bad Software" but perhaps merely "Mis-sequenced-when-loading" software.

The software possibilities - for us to guess without hands-on viewing of your machine and all of its software - may not be truly infinite. But compared to human patience, it certainly appears endless!

if this is a wired mouse, it's probably a short in the cable.

    Idea # 1 - replace the batteries.
Idea # 2 - try mouse on different computer.
    Idea # 3 - try another mouse.

So I've got a new element to add to this puzzle, and it started yesterday. Whenever the mouse turns off and back on, it messes with my audio levels. It suddenly lowers my audio either the sound from Chrome (youtube), iTunes or VLC if watching a video.
It doesn't lower the fader on windows mixer, more sort of like when you call on skype and it lowers the audio for you but when you look at the mixer there's 2 faders on 1 channel, 1 low and 1 high.

I'm starting to believe it's a drivers issue, any suggestions to fix? I'm using an external sound card: Edirol UA-25.

Many have been offered but you have totally ignored and/or failed to respond to all of them. :(

I repeat LOUDLY what I, and others have said several times - TRY ANOTHER MOUSE! And a plain generic one at that.

    (1) Just because your current mouse is new, that does not mean it cannot be bad.
    (2) If the problem happens with the new mouse, then and ONLY THEN do you then know the problem is not your current mouse - or its special drivers.

A "short" would require one wire to come loose out of the connector stripping away the insulation somehow exposing the conductor. And then that exposed conductor would somehow have to come in contact with ANOTHER exposed conductor. Not likely to happen without obvious physical damage to the cable.

That said, ONCE AGAIN, trying another mouse would shed some light there too.
