My screen keeps bouncing around, as if I'm scrolling my mouse back and forth quickly, up and down, when I am not even touching it. Is this a mouse issue, or do I have a virsus?

Could be either a hardware(mousewheel) or a software (driver) problem. Mouse model? have you tried using an other mouse instead?

Everything on the screen that I am working on. Not my desktop though. Bascially, anything that I can type on. It performs as though I am scrolling my mouse up and down, but very sporadically. It gets worse as time goes on, until I eventually have to shut my computer down, as I can no longer read what is on the screen.

I've not tried another mouse. I am using the one that came with my COMPAQ. It is not cordless.

this is by far the weirdest problem i've heard of ... I'm imagining the windows bouncing up and down like mario on a koopa troopa ...

anyway ... try another mouse first ... could be the switch inside your mouse has broken .. is your scroll wheel loose?

when's the last time you searched for spyware? all sorts of weird problems arise from it ... I use spybot and adaware ... ccleaner is also a useful tool to get of .. uh .. crap .. might try looking at a few tuts in the spyware board

also do you have an internet keys keyboard that has a scroll wheel built-in?

if you don't have another mouse you can check by editing the registry .. although I wouldn't recommend a novice using it(not saying you are but anyway) ... but if you feel you're up to it .. you goto start>run>type "regedit" with out the quotes .. you should see folders in a window on the left hand column ... you want to goto hkey_currentuser\Control Panel\Desktop .. in the right hand column, if you scroll down you should see an entry called "WheelScrollLines" .. right click it and change the number to 0 ... then exit and reboot your computer .. you should now not be able to use you scroll wheel at all .. then see if the problem persists if it doesn't then your scroll wheel is defective ... to undo this simply goto the mouse control panel and select in the 'wheel' tab under the following number of times at a time, change that number to three then click 'OK'

I am comfortable with some settings adjustments, but i don't know about that one. My husband adjusted the mouse settings and it just made it worse. I'll say something to him about the scroll wheel.

I've made several replies, so I hope you see this one. I'm sure it's not my mouse, because I went to another site and the scrolling thing started again, so I'm sure the other mouse I have wouldn't have that same issue. So if it's not the mouse itself, I'll look into the scroll wheel settings. I'll let you know if that does it. Thanks!

    you're using windows XP?

this might be easier  ... going into the device manager (control panel>admin tools>computer management>[in the left hand column select 'device manager']) .. in the right hand column click the '+' sign next to mice and other pointing devices .. you should see something like PS2 mouse or HID mouse or some such label .. now what I would do is uninstall everything there, if there's more than one device then reboot(using your keyboard windows key> then arrow keys to navigate the start menu) then let windows detect the mouse again .. this will reset the mouse drivers ...

read this to remove spyware: (this is what I meant by "tut" or tutorial)

    MGs Spyware tutorial

keep in mind the focus of the article is removing spyware not fixing a mouse problem .. I just use adaware, spybot and spywareblaster .. I also you CCleaner to clean garbage I don't need off my computer, it also fixes a mouse issue of mine that pops up every now and again where my pointer 'sticks' in place, so I'd recommend running that problem (esp. the registry portion of it) .. you can dl all those programs here:

    AdAware
    SpyBot
    SpywareBlaster
    ccleaner

I did it all by myself!! :) So far, no scrolling of the screen, but of course, I now have no scroll bar on my mouse. I'll have to get use to that!

I am using XP. I already have SpyWare. Do I need something else? I'm sorry, why do I want to go to "device manager". Shouldn't I wait and see if disabling the mouse scroll wheel works? Of course, if that is the problem, then how do I actually fix it? I don't want to always go without my mouse scroll. Is that what you suggested the 'device manager" program for?

well .. I think your driver may have become corrupted somehow ... either from spyware or some other way .. the best way is to remove the device from the device manager as I explained .. this is different from removing spyware this is just removing the mouse driver so it can reset itself and possibly fix the issue so you can use the mouse normally w/ the scroll wheel ... rest assured that when you reboot you will get a dialog that reinstalls your mouse drivers .. if not just yell at me :p .. you will have to operate the system using just your key board ... remember TAB switches locations and the windows key brings up the start menu and arrows switch menu objects ... it's really not that hard ... you should be able to just hit enter when you are prompted and that should take you through reinstalling your mouse

now ... when you say "I already have spyware" .. uh ... now maybe it's just a matter of semantics but you don't want spyware .. lol ... I'm thinking you're referring to the apps that get rid of the junk

btw .. did you run ccleaner?

Hi! I've been letting my mouse work for a couple of weeks to see what happened, after I disabled the scroll. I have no scroll, BUT my screen has STOPPED all the vertical rolling!!! :D
Alas! My mouse now drifts up and down, or side to side!! If I leave the cursor on a vertical, or horizontal slide bar, the screen then slides! So the other crazy stuff stopped, but now I have this problem (not as bad as the other problem, but still a huge nusiance! ).

I went into Device Manager, and followed your instructions (good directions!). I disabled the mouse and pointer drivers, rebooted and everything is the same! Nothing has changed. So if my mouse driver is corrupted, I don't know what to do. I have plenty of SpyWare, Firewall, Virus and Privacy, etc. etc. protection, through Microsoft and Mcafee. I looked at the CCleanup and some of the other options you listed. I already have some of those from Microsoft.

Can I reinstall my mouse scroll? I really miss it! It's such a pain not to have it. :(

Bottom line: I still have screwy mouse drifting issues, which I never used to have, but at least my screen no longer scroll and flips around like fireworks (what a mess that was! :( ).

What is next?

"Can I reinstall my mouse scroll?"

yes, by all means I just wanted to know if it was the mouse that was causing that or something else... I didn't think you'd actually keep it that way, just use the mouse properties(select in the 'wheel' tab under the following, number of times at a time, change that number to three then click 'OK'), you don't have to go into the registry again

ok ... try booting to safe mode and see if it happens there ... restart your computer>then constantly tap F8 until you get this screen that gives you a choice of start in safe mode ... safe mode w/ networking ... start w/ last known config blah blah blah .. select safe mode with networking, then open your browser and surf the net for a bit to see if it still happens .. if it stops happening it's a conflict with an app that starts with windows when you turn on your computer normally
