Mouse selector doesn't work in active window

New Samsung laptop computer. Windows 8. Open Mail program - gmail. Can't scroll, select, minimize, x-out, modify accounts or select email to view. My mouse will move, "excite" link and otherwise acts normal but, it won't do anything. Keyboard is the same. Move touch pad pointer with same results as mouse. Ran Malewarebytes, still no success. I have to highlight the icon on the toolbar then select the open window again to close the program or right click the icon and select close. Happens in browser too (FireFox). Have all programs up to date. Latest downloads, etc. I've been searching the web, no help...suggestions?

 

Did your mouse and touchpad work right when you first bought your laptop? Is your computer still under warranty? If so, a call to the manufacturer's tech support would be appropriate.

Do you have an up-to-date antivirus program installed? Did you make any software changes just prior to when the problem started?

Have you thought about upgrading Windows to version 8.1?

 

I loaded everything from my old computer onto the new one. That is when I discovered the problem. AvastAV program updated and ran. Nothing found. I'll take your advice and contact tech support. May be something small that I've overlooked. Definitely possible. I may as well upgrade to 8.1 while I'm at it. Appreciate your input. Also, appreciate you being a vet! World of Thanks!
