    So I recently had some problems with my computer, so my uncle fixed it for me by reformatting it basically, but he was able to save most of my files by transferring them somehow or something. But anyway, I got it back a few days ago, and it seems like every day that I've used it, my mouse decides to stop working. It's an optical mouse, so the light turns off and everything. I restart my computer and it works again, but it is really really annoying. One time it wasn't just my mouse, it seemed like my whole computer kind of froze because my music stopped playing too. Can anyone provide any insight as to what may be causing this?

    Several different things can affect how well your mouse functions.

    However, the key sentence in your description of your mouse problem: "It's an optical mouse, so the light turns off and everything." Since the "light turns off" this definitely indicates that the likely suspect is that you have a 'power' problem. Something between the mouse and the power source is amiss.

    It's quite possible your connections between the mouse and computer may be loose or damaged. Go behind the computer housing, unplug the mouse connection plug and then plug it in again. If it still does not work correctly; it could be that the cord or wires inside the cord are damaged.

    If it is a 'wireless' mouse, it could be the batteries are running low – you should try changing the batteries. Optical mice are certainly convenient, but both of these types of mouse products; wireless and non-wireless - are notorious for being easily (and irreparably) damaged when dropped - even just once.

    Other remote possibilities and common causes for optical mouse problems:

    Additionally, your mouse driver may need updating or replacement if it something has corrupted your mouse driver. You can either 1) re-install the driver from the CD that came with your mouse, or 2) roll back the driver. Either one of these may help.

    To roll back your driver in Windows XP, go to Start --> Settings --> Control Panel --> Mouse. Click on the "hardware" tab. Select the appropriate pointing device, and click "properties." Click the driver tab, then select "roll back driver."

    Another thing I would look for with optical mice is any sort of obstruction under the optical sensor; which is that part on the bottom of the mouse where the red light shines out. Sometimes dust, lint, or similar impediments get stuck between the optical sensor and the surface your mouse sits on, causing unexpected behavior. Even a tiny bit of lint or dust can affect mouse behaviors. Use a Q-tip with a little dab of water on it to clean the optical sensor.

    Good Luck!

    Ok, so silly me never actually re-installed my mouse after my computer was re-formatted, but now I think it's not just my mouse. Everything worked fine yesterday so I thought reinstalling it fixed something. But today my computer definitely froze again. THe mouse turned off, the music stopped playing, and I was in the middle of right clicking to open up a page in a new window and that definitely stopped as well. So what can be causing this now?

    rooney;

    try another mouse good chance that the mouse is bad or has a bad connection at the mouse end point of the most bending of the wire if is a wireless mouse u may have bad batteries and or interfence in the area but try and other mouse and see if it is the computer or the mouse.
    I had an optical go bad and it was the cord right at the mouse.

    hope this helps
