Hello, and thanks for reading this. I've noticed that several files in various areas of my laptop, when moused over, show them as Type: Video CD Movie. Some examples of these are as follows:

In C:\WINDOWS - bootstat, nsreg, mozver

In C:\I386 - HWCOMP and SECUPD

In C:\WINDOWS\System32 - FNTCACHE, mlang, oembios

They are all over my computer. Any ideas? I've completed your entire Read and Run Me and did everything as requested, just in case. And before I came across this website, I found some article about a virus whereby another girl seemed to have similar problems to mine so I ran several of the same programs for viruses and malware that you use here and sure enough, I had Trojan.BHO and .Dialer, Rogue.Installer and .Multiple, Trojan.Agent and Hijack.Startmenu. As far as I know, I got everything (except an ietorrentplug.dll). I will wait and see what you need from me, if anything, before I bother you further. Please be gentle - I am new at this! Thanks kindly. You do great things here!

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

This is not a malware problem and this thread will be moved to the Software Forum.

If you did not have your file extensions hidden, you would notice that all of those files have a .DAT extension and you have that file extension associated to a program that believes these are all Video CD related.

Hi chaslang. Thank you for responding. My apologies for putting this in the wrong category. I thought perhaps the problem I am having might have been caused by some malware or something.

I did double check and I am not hiding files and folders and there is no checkmark in "hide protected operating system files." I went into Nero and didn't see anything there file extension wise that should be causing this. If it isn't going to be a problem, I'll not worry about it.

You probably installed a media player and let it associate with .dat files as part of its default installation. It is not a problem except if you double click a .dat file it will try to open in that player.

The option to see extensions (which is useful for almost anyone and should be the default IMO) is in Explorer Tools>Folder Options>View tab>Uncheck the box for "hide extensions for known file types". BTW you probably should Hide protected system files and even "not show hidden files" to avoid accidental deletion.
