You say you "found" this movie? Where? Online? Available for download as an MP4 file? Is this the old Vincent Price film of the novel or the newer version? If it's the older version, unless the film's copyright has expired and was not renewed, it is indeed piracy unless you purchased or had given to you a legit copy of the film (on UMD -- the PSP disk format, or DVD, or commercial videotape copy made by a company who licensed the right to distribute the film from the studio or whoever has the legal rights).

And if it's the newer version, just because the movie hasn't yet been released on DVD doesn't negate the fact that the film is a copyrighted work and may not be stolen -- which is what piracy is. (And besides, I believe it has been released on DVD recently. At least I found it available for rent on Netflix.)

The mere fact that you found an MP4 file of the film available for download doesn't of itself make it legal, even if you paid some sort of membership fee to the website you downloaded it from. It isn't legal or ethical for someone to sell something (or even give it away for free) that they don't legally own in the first place.

If you are indeed sure you legally purchased or had given to you legally a copy of this film then that's a different matter. But I wouldn't think MP4 files would be a likely choice for commercial distribution of films.

What website did you download this film from? Or did someone just give you a copy of the MP4 file they burned to a DVD or CD?

As the poster above wrote, the owners of this website will not condone, endorse or encourage piracy of music, film, books or other copyrighted works and will remove any threads that they judge to be facilitating such activities.

Just for the record, I didn't even know I am Legend was a movie. If you've got an .avi copy of a movie that hasn't officially been released on DVD yet--then, yes, you most probably are violating copyright laws.

Hi. I just stole a movie online. I downloaded a pirated film, but I can't watch the bootlegged movie on my TV. Can you guys help me to continue to steal stuff for my own personal gain? I don't ever want to legally buy anything, so if you can help me pirate more stuff, I'll be able to save money to buy more blank discs so I can pirate more bootlegged and illegally recorded/distributed movies that I have no right to copy. Thanks.

(Sarcasm? Anyone? :innocent Yes, in case anyone is wondering, I am joking. Duh!)

AVS Video Converter is quite good. I use it when I need to convert footage into a format editable in Premiere Pro, and my use of the software is for completely legal and legitimate purposes.

The original poster's question was about software, not copyright violation. :)

yeah, how did you get this movie? the Vincent Price version wasn't called "I am legend", it was called "The last man on earth". there is no legal way that you could've acquired the 2007 movie version, the dvd isn't released until the 18th of this month...

Ah, thank you, Speculant, for the correct title (The Last Man on Earth) for that old Vincent Price film based on the Mattheson novella, I Am Legend.

The Sony PlayStation Portable (aka PSP) actually has a proprietary video disk format known as UMD. Moves that are released commercially for the PSP are only released in the UMD format so far as I am aware. While there is software that will rip a movie from a UMD and convert it to the MP4 format which will play on a PSP, I've never seen commercially licensed films distributed as MP4's. Hence, my conclusion that the movie in question was, in fact, not a legit copy.

If anyone can point me to a source of legit MP4 copies of movies I'd be interested in that info as I own a PSP. There are websites that offer a variety of downloadable movies for the PSP, apparently in MP4 format, and charge a membership fee before allowing someone to download movies. I've looked at several of them which charge a one-time fee and then you can download all the movies you wish. That doesn't sound like a legit purchasing arrangement to me.

Of course, there are also warez and other shady sites that may offer free downloads of copyrighted films. I'm not saying that people always realize they're doing something illegal when they download copyrighted material from such sites. But I wanted to explain why I thought the movie the OP asked about was not a legit licensed copy.

If someone can point me to a site that is licensed to distribute MP4 copies of commercial movies for the PSP, I'd be grateful.
