Moving Windows 7 Files To Windows 10

I'm going to buy a new computer, but evidently, like it or not, I'm going to have to get either Windows 10 or switch to a Mac. My present desktop uses Windows 7 and evidently quite a few of my programs will not work on 10 (MS Works, MS Money, MS Media, etc.) What can I do to keep all my present "stuff"?

You could run the programs in compatibility mode for Windows 7 in Windows 10 and perhaps the programs WILL run under Windows 10 and you won't need to run them in compatibility mode. Despite appearances, Win 10 and Win 7 are similar. In fact, some Win 7 features are incorporated into Win 10 like Backup and Restore for instance.

As mdonah says, most programs work just fine in Win 10 that worked in Windows 7. However, the programs you actually mentioned were all discontinued many many years ago, and support for them generally ended at least 6 years ago. Even if they didn't work on Win 10, there are far better free alternatives available now both by Micros0ft and other developers.

If I replaced these programs, how would I retain all the info in them? Another big concern is that I'm also using Windows Live mail which I understand has also been discontinued. How can I save all my e-mail files and contacts? I sure wish that my computer was not suffering from old age!

Windows Mail in Win 10 is not that different to earlier versions in Vista, 7 and 8 and I'm sure it's possible to transfer settings. You can still save data from MS Works and Money that you currently have in Win 7 but see if the programs themselves will work in compatibility mode. And to be honest Libre Office and Apache OpenOffice are much better than MS Works and are free.

The Mail app in Win 10 has nothing at all in common with earlier versions but happily for you there is a solution to your problem. Bookmark THIS thread for when you have to deal with the problem.

The transfer for those using msn and live mail accounts in WLM to Outlook.com mail seems quite straightforward. The other option for the long term is to use a better mail client than the Windows Mail app.

    Good luck.
When you move to Windows 10 you will need to make a back up of Thunderbird profile - including all mail, messages and settings and save to a USB or CD and - from my use - the best free program to use is Mozbackup

It's an old program but I know from use it still works on Win 10.

My Asus laptop came with 10, but 10 just was too wonky for me (popups saying "Try Microsoft Office" while I watched a movie was the last straw). I checked and sure enough there were threads on putting 7 on my particular model. If you can find someone that put 7 on your specific computer you don't have to change. All you need are drivers. Either have two computers so you can download drivers during the install or put them on a USB before hand.
Alternatively, you can just have the Ethernet driver and once 7 is running download drivers directly. You might have to consider a "crippled" 7 install which I have done. There was no driver for the camera on that particular laptop so I just called disabling the camera a security feature.

I never get any pop ups about getting anything on Win10.

I was constantly getting "try Office 365" (or similar) until I turned off background apps in Privacy.

The moment I upgraded my 4 systems to Win 10 I immediately used IoBit Uninstaller's 'Windows Apps' to cleanly remove all the apps I didn't want, which was most of them!

mdonah-My sister is still getting "Try Office 365" on every login. Now I know how to stop it.

Max- I have System Mechanic. For my future reference and my Sister's Windows 10 computer do you have an opinion on how
System Mechanic's "advanced" uninstaller compares to Iobit's? For someone going with Iobit, is paid uninstaller pro worth
the price over free? Iobit also has the Advanced SystemCare 10 Free suite that comes with their uninstaller.

I'm not a user of those 'system optimisers' of any kind. I've known them to cause so many problems for the average user. I also never ever accept any of the suggestions that IoBit make. Advanced System Care doesn't come with the Uninstaller, it is a suggested additional program, not a part of it.
I don't know of any standard 'paid' program that is worth the money so no I never buy system security or system maintenance software.
