I would like to know how to transfer my bookmarks (Mozilla) from the old hard drive (which is added to this computer) to the new hard drive. I am sorry, but I can USE programs, just not trouble shoot them. OS is Windows 7.

I found the .json file from the older hard drive and copied it over to the same location the newer ones are in. I restored...nothing. Did a restart.
What else should I be doing? I am very frustrated.

Downloaded xmarks for future. My problem is what to do now.

    Thanks.

Open Firefox. Select Bookmarks>Show all bookmarks. In the upper menu bar click the Import and Backup dropdown menu. Select Restore>Choose File and browse to your Json file.

Hmpf, and I just wrote this out:

(Alt) Bookmarks > Organize Bookmarks > Import and backup > select Restore > Choose file... In the resulting popup, select the JSON file that you saved from the old drive and open it. Another popup will ask if you want to replace your current bookmarks. Choose Yes.

    :-D

I would say you did not have the correct json file. Look for a bookmarks.html file in this path on your old hard drive.

C:\Documents and Settings\<user>\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\*****.default where ***** is an alphanumeric string.

You would copy this bookmarks.html file to the profile location on your Windows 7 computer. In WIndows 7 it would be

    C:\Users\<user>\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\*****.default

I should mention that this will replace all of your bookmarks currently on the Windows 7 computer so if you want to keep those, move the bookmarks file elsewhere and do not overwrite it.

Inside the \Profiles folder with the funny looking name that tgell described,
look for a folder named bookmarkbackups

It contains backup copies of your bookmarks, made at different times.
They are all in the .json format.

I HAD the correct .json file. From before the computer was updated. I tried to update info from the .json files 3 months before the upgrade. I tried the .html files. Nothing worked.

Thanks for your time and your knowledge. Nothing seemed to work.

My daughter and I spent the last 48 hours thinking of every link we had and restoring them. For those with knowledge...do I need to change from Mozilla to...???

I do not want to do this again.

    Thanks, again.

Have you tried opining your json file in Notepad to check that the data is readable?

Yes...even though it was dated 2 weeks before the "computer" change, then Jan. which was 3 months before the computer change. it was the same info as that day.

Do I need to change from Mozilla to something else? I do not want to do this again. I have spent 48 hours of my Memorial Day weekend to this.

    Nasty stuff.

    Thanks,
    caryzoo

I gave wrong info on the bookmarks.html file. Sorry. I thought it contained all of the current bookmarks but the file that does this is called Places.sqlite. I would look for this in your profiles folder on the old hard drive. Rename it on the new hard drive before you copy it over. If you have windows 7 is is located at:

    C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\*******.default

    http://kb.mozillazine.org/Places.sqlite

I am not sure why you cannot import any of your json backups. It should not be this difficult.

I suggest you get MozBackup, it is simple to use and has never failed me.
Edit: MozBackup will not recover and restore any Bookmarks that are missing at the moment, I only suggest it for future backups of your Bookmarks etc

If you've ever set up Sync in FireFox you should be able to just log on and get the bookmarks back via the server. http://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/firefox-sync-take-your-bookmarks-and-tabs-with-you At least that's how it's supposed to work. I've only done this twice, I knew I had set up the service, and it still takes some time to get it accomplished. It's more designed to sync bookmarks between various devices rather than back up your bookmarks.
