    Hi everyone,

My mother wrote to me yesterday to say that she had a problem with her Mozilla email program. Apparently, as she tells it, when she clicks to open an email, something that looks like a "blank piece of paper" opens instead, and blocks her view, and freezes her computer. When I asked, she said that it's not a window, and there is no way of closing whatever is blocking her view. When she re-starts her computer the problem goes away, until she tries to open her email again. The problem then starts all over again.

I had her scan for viruses with AVG (which is automatically updated daily), but no viruses where found. I then had her restore her Mozilla mail with a 2-week-old backup, using the Mozilla backup program. The problem went away briefly, but then came back today.

Short of re-formatting her drive, I'm at a loss as to what to do next. She has a 1 yr old Emachine running XP SP1 Home edition (which has all the critical updates installed), and is using the email program wrapped in Mozilla 1.6. She is also running AVG 6.0 antivirus, and Zonealarm 5.1

Anyone have an idea of what might be causing this?

For a clean install of the latest Mozilla, you can delete the sub-folder "mozilla.org" under the Program Files\Mozilla folder. In XP, all the personal settings, bookmarks, emails, and addresses are stored elsewhere, and will be retained and available when the updated version is installed and run.

I still don't know if that's going to be the solution to her problem, but it can't hurt.

Thanks for the suggestions. I will probably do that (install 1.7) the next time I visit. Do you think that having an older version of Mozilla is the problem, or is that just general advice? I'm also using version 1.6, and have no problems whatsoever........with MozMail anyway :D.

I've never seen that, and I have used all versions of Mozilla, including the nightly builds. I consulted the owner of the Unofficial FAQ earlier, via ICQ, and he's never seen it either. Like I said-- couldn't hurt.

In my opinion tell her to go for it.She'll like the the new version,as posted on Mozilla.org
For web browsing, email, HTML editing, IRC chat, and more
    # Built with your privacy and security in mind
    # Stop popups and junk mail
    # Open multiple web pages in the same window with tabbed browsing
    # Get Mozilla 1.7.2 if you're looking for a rock solid, proven Internet suite that includes a web browser, email application, web page editor and more.
If she need's help on setting up the new browser come back and post again.
Myself I'm using Mozilla version 1.8a3

Yeah, I've never heard of anything like it before either. I guess I'm gonna have to make an unscheduled visit to moms'. Not, that I don't enjoy seeing her, it's just kind of a long trip. Oh well, a man's gotta do, what a man's gotta do :D. Thanks again.

Well, I talked mom thru a Mozilla 1.7.2 upgrade yesterday, and as of this morning, everything looks normal. Looks like the update fixed the problem. Thanks again.
