    I use XP H Ed SP1

I wonder if anyone here is using Mozilla's browser Firefox and their e-mail/newsgroup program Thunderbird? I didn't have any problem getting Firefox going. Now I just have to learn it. Looks good! easy access to lots of search engines which I like a lot. No freezes or hangups so far.

However...I would like to use Thunderbird for my e-mail and newsgroups program rather than Juno and Outlook. However, I get the message "Could not connect to server juno.com (my ISP?...how I connect to the Internet). The connection was refused."

I got a reply from the Mozilla Thunderbird forum saying "Juno uses a proprietary email format. You have to read your Juno mail with a web browser or with Juno's own client email software." JUno now uses their own browser plus their e-mail program. They use Yahoo search engine. You don't see IE at all. I connect to the Internet through Juno and then use Firefox to surf the net.

I would like to use Thunderbird's e-mail and newsgroups if possible. If not the e-mail I would like to use their newsgroup feature. I haven't seen any ISP program with either Mozilla program. Don't they have to piggy-back on to something like Mindspring or Juno etc?

Any help is appreciated. cranky

Not sure about the proprietary Juno thing. But I remember installing Thunderbird and seeing something for "RSS Support", perhaps this is something you need. Some of the other geeks here could probably fill us in.

I did a quick search and it looks like juno is going to a completely web based interface for their e-mail, effectively doing away with the ability to send or receive mail with any mail cllient including there own. Hopefully someone will step up and put out a program like 'YahooPOPs!' which would let you access your account using a POP3 mail program. Long story short looks like your outta luck.

Ah well. Web-mail ain't all that bad, is it?

I would get a real ISP.

That's what I thought was happening. I'll give them a call...they don't have a newsgroup offering that I know. Thanks for replying. cranky

What would you consider a "real" reasonably priced ISP? A dial-up. One I could use FireFox/Thunderbird...one that is good to check out some newgroups, something I have not done before. I was thinking about Earthlink/PCPeople. I had MindSpring before they merged, I think with Earthlink, but that has been awhile. Not interested in AOL I just want a good way to get on the Internet and not be limited by my ISP. Did someone else mentioned Google as an ISP?

I started with Juno's free service whenever it came out, 1994??? and stayed with it as I also carrried CompuServe from 1994 for many years. Juno seems to be making an effort now to eliminate spam and fliter porn.. But for a while the assault of porn got to be too much and I not that big of a prude. They definitedly think I am a male as my name is used by both sexes although I spell mine with an 'i' That makes me think these particular sites are foreign, as culturally, Americans and the English would know if it ends in an 'i' it more likely a feminine name..but I digress.

Now, Juno's new interface is very limiting. Suggestions appreciated, thanks cranky.

Go with AT&T if your just looking for basic 56k connectivity. I've been using it for about 3 years now and never had a problem with it (well I have but they've all been my computers fault, not AT&T.) Their service is really reliable and you can set up multiple e-mail accounts (I think up to five.) They'll also tell you everything you need to know so you can set thunderbird up as your e-mail client. And last but not least the price. I think they're down to 13 bucks a month now. If not its 15 bucks a month which is still a steal for 56k. Don't go with the juno or netzero stuff. That is crap, you pay for what you get, bad unreliable service with a permanent add window you can't close until you log off the internet. And that accelorator stuff they offer is all bull. It only makes your web browsing faster. You won't download songs, movies, or any type of media faster. Go with AT&T

    P.S. AOL SUCKS!

Being in Atlanta you might try Bellsouth, they have some really good bundle deals with phone service, internet, and cell phone. I use them at home and have got dial-up for $4 a month (keep in mind that is part of a total package). The service has been great.

Thanks for the reply. I know they are running a special on their total package this month, but I'll check out dial-up. cranky

As an FYI, I'm in Macon (just south) and as long as you don't mind dial up or Bell South that seems the way to go for you. they have pretty reliable dial up and a good package to offer. I have cable and love it but I also spend too much time on the net ; )

As far as firefox and thunderbird go, I LOVE them! I still have IE installed in case it's needed but never use it. They are "floaters" as was mentioned before so you would have to have an ISP but not be connected to read mail (they work like OE and Outlook) FYI, and please correct me if I'm wrong, RSS is a "new" thing that's out that is kinda like a "ticker" that streams across your screen with info, I think you can set it to do what you want (weather, website, etc). I haven't reallt checked it out yet still trying to un-kill son's puter
    HTH!
