Mozilla Firefox Start Up Prompt

What does this mean and what can I do about it? I always press "no" because I do not know what it is for and it still comes up every time I start up firefox.

It's asking if you want Firefox to be used when you open a file that gets opened by a web browser. If you have Firefox and Internet Explorer on your computer, the choice would be between these two.

If you open a jpg picture file, it may be opened in a browser window (or perhaps yours open in a picture program). If you tried to open a file called readme.htm on a CD that had a game you were installing, it would open in either Internet Explorer or Firefox, depending on which is the "default" browser.

Decide if you want Firefox to be the browser used when one is needed and click "Yes" if so and "No" if not. If you don't want to be asked this again, uncheck "Always perform this check when starting Firefox." This can be changed from the Tools menu later if you want to.

 

If you do want Firefox to be your default browser, you should leave "Always perform this check..." checked. The popup will appear only if Firefox is not your default browser. If you don't want Firefox to be default, uncheck that box.

 

Duh! Thanks for the correction, Greenknight. Got my wires crossed and was thinking of "Don't ask me this again" messages instead (which are ALSO supposed to be checked...- oops!) Sorry about that Superstar. Yes, answer "yes" to the question and leave "Always...." checked if you want Firefox to remain as your default browser. The message box, as Greenknight correctly points out, will then only appear if for any reason Firefox stopped being your default browser, which is not likely to happen but can.
