I'm running Mozilla FireFox .8 and I can't get it to open links from another program. When I click a link in another program, such as Outlook Express or Trillian Pro, the link does absolutely nothing. FireFox is set as my default browser. Any ideas???

actually I think it is more Mozilla's fault, because I had another browser that would grab links. They just didn't put in the support for it.

    Hmmmm...

Firefox works on links in Outlook.

    I don't use OE, so...

I do everything I can to stay away from IE. I run Firefox, and Opera in most instances.

I had been seriously thinking about FireFox, or Mozilla, but still not sure. Even have thought about MyIE. Don't know much about that one at all. I will have to look it up and check it out.

We're in danger here of doing the endless "dance of the non-overlapping experiences." I don't use OE and never have, and I don't use Trillian and never have, and I only use IE when MS forces me to, to get updates,

    BUT

I DO use Firefox .8 as my default browser and I DO use other programs that have live Web links in them, and those links open just fine in Firefox .8, so the problem is NOT Mozilla Firefox .8.

I have never yet found any standard browser function to be MISSING from Firefox.

Eudora Pro (paid) is my main mail client. I also use a mail checker-notifier, because I don't want to keep Eudora running all day, and my mail checker checks all of my mailboxes on all of my POP servers and tells me
    1) when there's mail
    2) how much there is, and
    3) who it's from, and
it makes it easy dump mail from the servers without having to let it near my machines. The mail checker extracts Web links from messages that are still on my servers, and I can click a link in the checker and go to the Web from there.

I also use Word 2003 extensively, and live links in documents in that program. And I manually update a number of programs by clicking internal links.

All of the above work perfectly with Firefox, as they did with Firebird before it.

I also use a "mail checker notifier program," which is MailWasherPro and I use Benign with it, so nothing really gets through. I just want to be able to browse faster as I am on a dialup and they are extremely slow these days.

Firefox installs nicely and removes well, and a little housekeeping is all that's required if you uninstall it: wipe the Mozilla Firefox folder and wipe the Phoenix folder in Docs & Setts ... Application Data. Since it IS a clean install/uninstall, it might be worth a try for you. If it turns out not to be faster than IE for your browsing on dial-up, you can always dump it and go back to IE with no probs.

I'm on cable, so browser speed is not a factor in my choice of browser. But Firefox is so extremely configurable and can be customized so extensively that it is my browser of choice. IE, by comparison, is hopelessly primitive.

Ok WW, I downloaded Firefox and installed it, have not done any more to it as yet. I am using it at this moment and clicked on OE and it worked and clicked on Trillian and it worked, so maybe he has something configured wrong. Anyway Ww, want to thank you for the advice. I don't as yet know if I will keep it yet or not though. Okay? Thanks again. :) :)

Do you have Shimoda Hiroshi's Tabbrowser Extensions installed? There a re numerous options in there that might be affecting it. Specifically, you can Enable/Disable DDE support with some preferences.

Yes, I have that installed. How do I use to to enable DDE, etc?

What extensions and things would you suggest to download in it?

Getting just a bit more specific than flea <G>, I'll suggest two I like. I'm a minimalist with Firefox. I find it's just great as is. I change the theme, edit a few of the config files in Chrome slightly (page loading delay zero, Google default search behavior set, no Open in Tabs in my bookmarks lists, no Add to Bookmarks in the Bookmarks menu, individual choices ...), move the Cache to where I want it for fast easy clearing after every session, and put in these two extensions only: Text Links and Go Home. Text Links lets me select and right click any URL in a page, even when it's not written as a link and not highlighted as a link, and Firefox treats it as a live link and GOES. Go Home lets me Go Home (surprise) with a right click menu choice. (My own Home Page serves a multitude of purposes for me, so I begin and end EVERY Web session with it, and Go Home gives me yet ANOTHER way of getting there fast (in addition to the other twelve or so).

Not sure I know how to edit that stuff, but will do some looking it up. Thanks again WW. Sorry, no can give points anymore, but sure would have.

Well, it should default to on. There are some setting that tell you they will torun of DDE or affect how external apps work with Firefox, but for the life of me, I don't remember what they are.

Under the Advaced tab, there's a setion at the bottom that Says to Enable/Disable DDE support as necessary. Try enabling that.

Hm... odd. I've just gotten the most recent version of the extensions, and it no longer yells at me about DDE for what it used to. Maybe he fixed that. IIRC, it used to do so when you told it to always open things in tabs, but it doesn't seem to do that anymore.

Another option is to update to one of the nightly builds and see if that fixes your problem. I'm using the April 15th nightly build, and it's pretty stable on my system. They've fixed some of the things FireFox has trouble with (like CSS menus or JavaScript links).

I can't find the DDE support... The bottom option on the advanced tab is enable ctrl - click conbinations. Expert preferences are enabled. I'm running the latest version (1.10.2004040401).

While I was trying to figure it out though, I learned that I have about 2 plugins that have a feature like one that the tabbrowser extentions plugin has, so I disabled them. Is there a way to uninstall them?

I open emails fine in OE into Firefox. Hmm.. you did say it was your default browser correct?

Other than playing with some OE settings and making sure IE is not the default browser there, I wouldnt know, sorry. But try makin sure ie is not default in OE.

When I had MyIE2 installed, it could get the links from OE and Trillian just fine, and I can't find a setting in OE to change the default browser.

Just got back from a few days away.
I used that program to set my browser to Firefox instead of the one in Firefox, because of the problem of Firefox taking over almost all of the graphics files. It worked great and I have not had any problems opening links from OE (or Fidolook OE overlay) or any other program.
