Hello I am using Firefox browser and the latest version 51.0.1. I find that the bookmarks (show your bookmarks) beside the icon is not visible (the name of the web site) unless you point to the icon for a while to be visible. Is there anyway to make it always visible like the previous version. Thanks

I've been using Firefox forever and I've never known that icon since it was introduced (immediately to the right of the search box) to show anything unless you click on it.

Thanks for your prompt reply. What I mean is that normally when you you click on the bookmarks icon you will show all the favorite sides you have save, but this new version it shows the icons only and when you hover the mouse over the site then you can see the whole list clearly otherwise it is semi transparent. I hope you understand what I mean. Enclosed is a snapshot. bookmark.png

I don't think there is a way to do it without clicking on the icon. If you don't want to click on it, just press Ctrl+Shift+B on your keyboard.

You can back up your Profile Data so it is safe (always best to do that anyway) then go to 'Help > Restart with add ons disabled' and then see if that icon still shows no actual results.
If it shows the list properly after that then it could be an add on causing it.

In addition to interference from a specific add-on, that could very likely be caused by a corrupted database.
The places.sqlite database contains the bookmarks, browsing history and tags.
It is located in the Firefox profile folder.

The following Add-On can fix certain types of errors with the places.sqlite database.
    https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/places-maintenance/
I use this add-on and run it occasionally for maintenance.

I wouldn't advise you to download add-ons. They might end up dragging your machine.

The beauty of Firefox is that it allows you to install addons. I don't know anyone who runs FF with no addons. At the very least, I tell people to install an add blocker which goes a very long way to allow sites to load faster and an addon to block javascript which makes browsing a lot safer.

Did you actually try the suggestion in post #7 or not?
It is the standard troubleshooting step suggested on Mozilla's own support site and Mozillazine.
You then re-enable each add on one by one until the original problem recurs or not. It's simple and doesn't need any other so-called 'maintenance' add on/extension. I've never used that earlier quoted extension and the reviews are not that good but then I've never had a corrupted places.sqlite or its former file types in using Fx since it was Phoenix.

Thanks to all who have responded to my problem. The problems seem to solve as suggested by MaxTurner only if I restart from add-ons disabled from the help menu. When I went back to normal with add-ons enabled it cause the same problems. I disable all the add-ons but still it did not help (in normal mode). How do you disable one by one the add-ons to try which cause the problem, is it in normal or in the all add-ons disabled tab.

    ???
Did the add-on install properly? Did you run the process?? Did it report that the database was corrupt? Was it able to Reindex the database and finish successfully?

You can also restore your bookmarks from earlier copies. I don't remember if this affects browsing History.
First, use the same Library feature to make a new backup of your existing bookmarks.
Also, make a copy of the places.sqlite file in case you do lose the browsing history and want to try to restore that too.
Select Restoring bookmarks from backup in the contents menu at upper left.
You may have to try several older backup files until you get one that "works" properly.

I have had trouble with the places.sqlite database and others have also.
I have used the Places Maintenance add-on and it did fix some problem and was helpful.
Although some reviewers were not happy with the add-on, the majority of the reviewers did like it and gave it the highest possible rating of five stars.

Pale Moon is a premier web browser which was based on the same underlying Gecko engine until January 26, 2016 when version 26.0.0 was released with the new Goanna engine.
The Owner and Lead Developer of the browser is known on the forum as Moonchild.

Moonchild has recommended using Places Cleaner, an older add-on, for regular maintenance.

Places Cleaner is Not Multi-process compatible.
    Places Maintenance IS Multi-process compatible.

Places Cleaner does Not provide any information about the database status or about the process success or failure.
Places Maintenance DOES provide information about the database status, whether it is corrupt or not, and about the process success or failure, and the initial and end size of the database.

This surprised me too! It's based on Mozilla's data.

Thanks to all again for the needed information and help. Will try it out. May I ask is there any harm in using 'restart from add-ons disabled' for a prolong period as it solve the problems until the fault is found.
