I've used both and both are excellent. Firebird has a smaller footprint. It's my default browser:)

Just wanta jump in here to add that Firebird is under REALLY ACTIVE development, and the mainline Mozilla isn't. The plan at Mozilla.org is to make the "release" version of Firebird "the Mozilla browser," and the "release" version of Thunderbird "the Mozilla mail and newsgroups client," and the old Mozilla versions will then be mothballed and only maintained for those with historical (hysterical?) interest in maintaining them.

Firebird is lean and mean, and EXTREMELY customizable, as is Thunderbird, and as g1lgam3sh says above, the footprint is small-- even the combined footprint for the two. Compare the installed size of Netscape 7.x.

You can even get them as just plain vanilla ZIP files with no installer at all, and unzip them to whatever folder you want them to be in, and run 'em from there.

Firebird is my browser, too. I only use IE for WU and accessing those (dammit) other (stupid) sites that are non-compliant and won't admit Firebird.

Firebird is good, but personally I prefer Opera any day.

I've been using Firebird for about a week now in preference to IE6 and I am really pleased with it. It's much faster and I love the tabbed browser, and the choice of plugins is tremendous

BTW I tried Thunderbird (the email client) which has the makings of a good program to replace OE but it's not quite right yet, but I have no doubt that it will get there and when it does then it's goodbye to OE from me!

But it was reasonable at the time, way back when. The original one and only browser was Mosaic, developed at the Univ of Illinois, and when it developed into a kind of Godzilla of browsers among the emerging dinky competition, they blended Mosaic and Godzilla for Mozilla.

    Those were simpler times.

Been using Firebird for 2 days now. I like it and it seems much better than IE.

But, it is still in development and is not a browser for someone who wants to install and surf. It does require some tweaking, but for most of the geeks here, it's a piece of cake.

Use the MozillaZine forums, they are chock full of help and tips.

The releases are very stable, unless your running current just get the binary and run it.

Yeah, I love Firebird, but I need to get the new one (7?). It kicks IE"s a** when it comes to speed, it seems to me. The REAL Opera costs money anyway, right?
Maybe when they get it totally done, they'll rename it the MUSTANG
