Anyone use this browser? How does it compare to FireFox?

Mozilla is a very good browser. It is the open source bowser that Netscape is built from. With that said, I still like Firefox over Mozilla.

Mozilla is actually a integrated suite of Browser, e-mail client, IRC client, News Reader and HTML editor. Since, I use other applications, that I like better, for all those other capabilities, I have no real use for it.

Pretty much. I read somewhere, about a year ago when I was looking for alternatives to IE, that Mozilla.org would eventually replace the Mozilla project with Firefox. Have no idea if that is still the case or when it is going to happen.

That is still the case (at least to my knowledge). Eventually, firefox will replace the mozilla browser, and thunderbird will replace the mozilla email client.

Though, they (mozilla foundation) were going to shutdown mozilla altogether, but to many ppl liked using it, so they kept it onboard.

When is this all going to happen? One rumour I heard was when firefox and thunderbird hits 2.0.

One nice feature I'm waiting for is when they combine thunderbird and sunbird. Sunbird is their calendar program. Yes, I do know that you can get a extension/plugin for thunderbird that adds calendar support. But, I find it kinda buggy.

I use both Thunder & Sun Bird. They're both nice little programs...the way they should be!

I use Firefox, Thunderbird, and Sunbird. I really like the programs, they are compact, stable and fast. Just the way programs should be. I am eargerly waiting on the next release of SUnbird.

I'm a Firefox and Thunderbird user myself...and I have to say that i was amazed at the ease and increase in speed over IE, as far as firefox is concerned!! Thunderbird is pretty easy to use!! I was turned off of Eudora when they decided to put a bunch of cartoonish buttons on there without any labeling!!! I don't use OE just because I don't like Bill Gates!!!!! I think he might be the Anti-Christ!!!! :D

The big difference is that security is a core part of the design of Mozilla, Firefox, Thunderbird and Linux for that matter. Security is an afterthought with Windows and IE.

What do you mean ask Linux? Linux is not a company or an OS, it is the kernal that an OS is built on. Like I said in an early thread Windows 2000/XP and Linux Kernal 2.4/2.6 straight out of the box have security issues, both need to be hardened to make the OS secure. It's just that Linux has fewer security issues than Windows.

Yep, what i meant was ask ALL the linux providers !!! Its open source, and its gonna get worse. The kernal is now the target because its becoming as popular as w32, thus, greater security issues. Once human beings decide its is popular, then it becomes a target; ie itunes and linux. I am a linux user for cheap wifi, but the tide is turning. The geeks are bored with MS. Apple, and all the linux distros are next in line !!!!!!

Just because it is 'Open Source' does not mean it has security problems. 'Open Source' means the code is readily available to anyone for download and examination. It does not mean you can modify the code, and save it back to the cvs tree. Only the people who work on an open source project can modify the code in the CVS tree. Yes 'Linux' is becoming more popular and will become more of a target for the hackers, cackers, and script kiddies. However I don't think you understand just how wide spread the use of 'Linux' really is. It is the core operating system to Cell phones, PDAs (Except those that use Windows), Routers, WiFi devices, and over 50% of the servers are POSIX systems.

    Shadow_Puter_Dude MG Authorized Malware Fighter

Oh, and I forgot Hardware Firewalls. Why is this? Because, the 'Linux' kernal is compact, stable, fast, and secure.

Well, i did not imply that open source meant security problems. My assertion was completly its popularity, as is apples. And you CAN modify the code. The tree is easy to climb. Yeah, I dont understand !!!

  16. Shadow_Puter_Dude

    Shadow_Puter_Dude MG Authorized Malware Fighter

The tree is easy to climb? If you aren't a member of the project you can't modify and submit the code to the project. Yes someone can and has broken into the cvs trees of a couple of projects, most notably the Debian GNU/Linux project. But the code is not open to anyone and everyone for modification inside the project.

As far as I'm aware Mozilla is no longer.

I remember reading recently that it would no longer be released or supported.

As far as security, popularity has a part, but the main reason Internet Explorer is so "unsafe" is that it relies heavily on ActiveX and that it's so tightly integrated to the operating system.

Yeah, but I'm sure I remember reading that it won't be developed beyond this.

I don't particularly want to dig through all my magazines just to find it, but I do recall reading it.

It could also be old age creeping in. :)

I thought they were going to stop development on Mozilla too, but lo and behold if there isn't a nightly release dated today on the 1.7 development tree.

I agree that popularity impacts security, and that ActiveX is a large part of why IE is so unsafe. I just don't like people spreading FUD about the 'Open Source' development model. With both 'Open Source' and 'Closed Source' you find 'Gems' and you find programs that leave you wanting.

And if the 'Open Source' development model forces Microsoft to make a better more secure product, then everbody is a winner.

I'm still adamant that I recently read that Mozilla would no longer be developed.

Can anyone clarify this either way with any certainty?

  21. Shadow_Puter_Dude

    Shadow_Puter_Dude MG Authorized Malware Fighter

They just release 1.7.8 today. When they are going to stop development, ???, but I'm pretty sure that they are going to. Can't find anything on mozilla.org that states if and when they are going to stop development.

Thanks for that, I knew I'd only just read something similar recently.

The latest release would have been in the making weeks or months ago, so it's no surprise that it's been released.

I just don't think there will be any future releases, officially at least.

It says in the above link

"The movement has since given birth to a new group that may take over future releases of the suite. "

    So only time will tell.

Personally, I could never understand the need for both Mozilla and FireFox.

I'm no expert on either, but I think Mozilla is/was supported and developed officially by Netscape, whereas FireFox was released open source, after the Internet Explorer/Netscape browser war, and developed by the "community".

My understanding is that mozilla is open source and nutscrape based their browsers on it. The difference between firefox and mozilla is that firefox is a stand alone browser and mozilla is a complete suite (with email etc.).

  26. Shadow_Puter_Dude

    Shadow_Puter_Dude MG Authorized Malware Fighter

Yes Mozilla is the project that Netscape builds their browser from, and Firefox is the future of Netscape. The Mozilla Suite, if not dead with this release will be dead soon.

    Re: Mozilla Users be aware

No matter how advanced the spam checker is, there will always be a certain amount of spam that gets through. Spam checking does not check for viruses. That is what anti-virus scanners are for. And a good AV scanner will catch the virus as it is being downloaded from the e-mail server.

Looks like any questions on when Netscape was going to move from Mozilla Suite to Firefox just got answered. Netscape 8.0 in a word sweet.
