    Hi Folks,

Using NeroExpress I burned 4.6 MB of MP3 albums, etc. to a data DVD disc. I now notice that NeroExpress gives two choices, to make a data DVD and to make an MP3 DVD.
Well, I must've used the former, and made all the albums into data DVDs.

Now when I try to copy them back to the PC hard drive, so as to burn them onto CDs, I find I am getting a 'redundancy error' message.....and I can't seem to get those files back off the DVD and onto the hard drive for further burning or editing.
Did I really goof, and spoil all those MP3 albums ?? They are now all files on a data DVD.
    What now?? Any advice ??

    Thanks friends,

Someone else might come in with more info than me. The dvd bring data shouldn't matter in this case. I get this error when I use a thumb drive of mine. I *know* it has a bad (sector, spot, place) on it as it happen at the same amount of data every time. I am guessing the dvd just has a error on it. One program that I use to get past this is IsoBuster (not sure if they have a working trial though) another way it to watch as it is copying that data from the dvd and see where the error happens, then try to copy data off up to that point then skip a album or two and try from that point to the end. You might lose a few albums by skipping the 'bad' spot.

I might be crazy or wrong in thinking this way but its worked for me a time or two.

Well, I got a 'free to try' version of 'CD DVD Data Recovery' from CNET - it seems to already be finding bad sectors and/or corrupted pieces in the first MP3 album.....and it has a long way to go, since I set it on 'slowest' so as to get the best quality. I'm not sure if this 'free to try' copy will do the entire DVD.....since these types of trial-deals usually have limitations. So we'll see if the copied (and hopefully corrected) albums are in the destination file in tact. It might only do the first 10% or something....
But there's still something I'm puzzled about. I bought the good quality DVDs from Memorex, set the copying speed options in NeroExpress to the slowest (4X, I believe), so as to avoid bad sectors and errors in the writing.
Is it a bad idea to try to fill the whole DVD right up to the brim with data? Should you only use, say, 3.9 GBs of the promised 4.7 that are there? Is it like cramming it all in, and bunching stuff up ? Should one leave some 'breathing room' when burning a back-up data DVD (since I frequently make back-ups on DVDs) ?
My real Q is this : Since I got top quality, big-name OEM blank DVDs, and burned all that data very slowly onto the DVD for maximum accuracy....I think 4X or even 2X....then why am I getting so many corrupt sectors ????

That is the "burning" existential question of the day....why is my DVD data burning going sour when I take such pains to go slow and get it accurate ???

Perhaps it is because I only have 1GB of RAM (two 512MB sticks) ? Could that be it ??? Whadda ya think ?

    Thanks -scottportraits

If you want quality media, buy Verbatim (1st choice) or Taiyo Yuden (2nd choice).

The CD/DVD burner records from the center to the outside. The problem is toward the outside edges, the recordable layer gets dicey. This is especially true with cheaper discs. I recommend no more than 4.2 or 4.3GB on your DVD disc.

Try this if it won't do the whole DVD: http://majorgeeks.com/download2623.html
    It's free.

    Hi Jus' Playin,
Yeah, am working with this "Roadkil's Unstoppable Copier 4.0" and it is certainly a clever device. Slow, and tedious to get back all those lost .mp3 album files....but it seems to offer a great advantage here. And it's freeware !!

So you counsel not to put more than 4.2 GB onto a data back-up DVD....I will take this advice to heed. It seems sound. I wonder where the 'main menu' is located on the DVD, if it's nearer the outer diameter, because it seems ALL the files on my DVD here, (and maybe elsewhere if I go back in my DVD data 'saves'), are corrupted. That is, the copy-pass is showing errors on all the albums. So how does bunching up all those separate files near the 4.7 point 'over-saturate' the disk and render all my separate .mp3 album files error-laden ? Each is a separate file, and had to be tediously added to the batch work order I am running now as I type and post. Many files, many 'bad' reads....that is, errors.
    Hmmmmmmm.....

Do ya think also my limited RAM is compromising the gigantic (4GB+) burning process?

Thanks for the tip about Roadkil's.....it's very good.

It's possible you have a bad batch of discs. I ran into the same problem once myself. I ended up tossing at least 30 of a 50 disc spindle pack. There are only a few factories that actually produce discs and many of the name brands farm the work out to the lowest bidder.

Due to the way a disc is manufactured, there is some variation in the outer edge of the recording layer. The closer data is recorded to that outer layer, the greater the chances it could just run off the edge of that layer.

As far as RAM, it shouldn't have a real impact unless you are running another memory intensive program while burning the disc. To be safe, burn discs when you're not running anything else and use the Nero verification option to make sure it turned out right.
