    Hey guys,

My mom really could use someone's help. She bought my sister an MP3 player for Christmas (Sandisk Sansa 500 series I believe).... now my sister is going to get an MP3 player but has no music!

So, I start looking online for music services and am having a lot of trouble finding a good music download site. What I am looking for is a website that contains a large collection of artists (new and old) along with a lot of music especially country music :p.

Aside from wanting a website with a lot of music on it, I would like it to be legal, have great sound quality(128kbs+), cheap prices, no weird formats, 100% legal (No allofmp3.com!) and NO DRM OF ANY KIND.

Anyone know of a good website I could look at?

    Thanks!

Thanks for the quick reply :).

Well, we looked at EMusic and read the reviews on it and it is like that Wikipedia article says: They don't have many major labels... So having 1.5 million songs at your finger tips with probably 0.5% of anything you'd want isn't too desirable :p. Thanks though :).

    Any more suggestions?

    Hello once again :).

Gonna give this thread a little bump as my mom is still worrying... If bumping is against the rules, sorry :p.

Have a good one, and thanks.

Hey Big Foot I have one suggestion for you... bear in mind this is coming from the fact that you want this to be as legal as possible so I am ruling out any Torrent downloads and things of the nature that are blatently illegal. This process is the same thing I have used to build my own music collection to some 45 GB's it does cost a little bit of $$ but not much and if you want this to be as legal as possible money will be involved. At anyrate:

I use Rhapsody to download my music, and I use the $10 a month subscription membership (do NOT spend the money on the $15/month membership for "unlimited transfers to your mobile device, this is because that membership the DRM on each song needs to be refreshed every month = PAIN IN THE ***)

Then once Rhapsody downloads the songs it's true there is DRM on the songs. However, I then use a program called TuneBite (links below) and simply put, tunebite is worth every last penny of it's initial $18 cost. A quick synopsis of what tunebite does. You load your MP3's downloaded from rhapsody into the program and make the list as large as you want. Then you hit "GO" and it starts to play back every song in the list through Windows Media Player. As it plays the song back it will record the audio as a NEW MP3 file with absolutely NO DRM of any kind and you are free to do whatever you want with the new MP3 file. It will save the new MP3 file in a new tunebite folder. Once it's done you can delete the rhapsody download to free up hard drive space. When playing around with the settings in tunebite you'll fine you can even have the new MP3's sorted for you as it records into folders arranged how you want (i.e. mine are sorted by artist then album, then the songs) So creating the folder structure is really nice when dealing with many songs.

One really important note. Tunebite as it records is recording all sounds on your computer (I believe) so make sure you don't do anything during recording that causes noises. Personally, I run my recordings overnight because it requires a lot of CPU muscle to run this and if you bog down your CPU while it's recording your recordings will come out sounding choppy. There is also a High-Speed option which is great for large lists to be burnt it will play the MP3 at a high chipmunk speed but don't worry it will run like normal when it's all done and sound great.

The legality: I am certainly no expert of the law however technically your not doing anything illegal. It is true you are bypassing the DRM copyright, HOWEVER, you are not HACKING the copyright in anyway... you are not touching or tampering with the copyright AT ALL. It's very similar to if you held a tape recorder up to your computer speakers and recorded the sound coming out.. only it's MUCH MUCH better quality.. they are high quality MP3's that are made through this process... however, just don't get carried away and start sharing the MP3's you rip... then your very illegal... obviously... but on the RS Audials website (the people that make Tunebite) they talk about the legality issues and how it's legal and all that so if you need a conscience cleaner have a quick read there...

SO This process isn't really for someone who can barely use a computer but if you are slightly familiar with operating a computer and running basic programs you'll be fine... maybe you'll have to let your mom or whoever download whatever they want from rhapsody and then you can do the converting every now and then... your life

    Rhapsody is at www.rhapsody.com

    and tunebite is at
    http://www.audials-sales.com/website/v1/en/product.php?affiliate=1580ff2c915cff87a5e22a68c06d32ad

Hope this helps... let me know if you have any questions.

One possibility is maybe whoever has the MP3 player only needs new songs like once every 3 months... you can cancel your membership at anytime after you've downloaded and converted all the songs you want.. like I said once a song is converted it's yours and good forever. You just need to have an active membership WHILE your converting the songs.

Thanks for taking the time to post all of that!

I have heard of Tunebite and it looked pretty cool. I had never thought about trying rhapsody though, so thanks for that too :).

Lastnight we looked at all that Emusic had to offer and it has litterally nothing but indie music or old stuff you have never heard of. We made the decision to go with Wal-Mart music... But I haven't had time to fully see what format the files come in.

Thanks again and I'll look into that :).
