mp3 to midi convertion

OK so I know these programs usually suck... But do you know one that is more or less tolorable? If so don't hold back...

 

Id like to hear the answer to this. Ive no good reason to need such a program, but id like to know whether they actually exist.

 

There's a reason why conversion to MIDI always sucks, and always will. MIDI files are not sound files, like .wav, .mp3, etc. They are actually instruction sets to drive a synthesizer. To convert to .mid, a program has to guess at the instrument playing, pick an instrument out of the synth's soundbank, and program it to play the right notes at the right time, right volume, etc. And do that for all instruments playing. Extremely difficult to do and the sound you get back will not sound like the original. And it can't handle vocals at all, since the synth doesn't have it.

 

It could be ok if it was one instrument playing, and you set the instrument yourself.

 

Yeah, which is what I have..... An instrumental guitar track with just bass and drums.. the guitar stands out.. So I'd like recommendations anyway..

 

True, and once your tune is captured in a midi file, you can edit the file to change instruments, and tweak it, but while some midi files can sound good, some VERY good, particularly where the creator has built the song track by track with a real synthesizer, but they'll never sound like a real song that you're converting.
