now my question is, has anyone actually bought or used one of these things? i was thinking about buying one of the cheaper "touchscreen" models just to mess around with.

I'd be careful spending even a little bit of money on them as you could find yourself with a worthless piece of junk a month after you buy it.

Not surprising that they are all coming from China where there are also a ton of pirated DVDs coming from.

Nope dont do eBay, but while some clones may work ok, not had experience with iPod clones but did do many years back with digital camera clones and many worked first time on use but after that failed, much to the disgust of the buyer and as they had bought these items abroard they where unlikely to be going back and getting money back.

Do you want an iPod, just cheaper, or would you "settle" for another brand that has the touchscreen functionality? If the latter, then go to ABI and check out their comparison database. If the former, then accept that you might end up with a piece of junk that dies on you after a month or so. If you're not willing to pay for quality electronics, you're not going to get it either.

I wasn't saying that I would buy a mp4 player as a serious music/media player, I just was thinking about getting one just to mess around with.

The top link is what I have, only mine is 8GB. Have had it for a month and no problems whatsoever. I also bought a classic iPod ripoff I've had for over 2 years with no problems at all, ever. I do, however, look at the sellers ratings to make sure they're legit sellers who don't rip you off.
