Mpeg and Quicktime freezing problems!

Im running XP, SP2, Media Player 10 and Quicktime 7. When ever I play a movie file with Media Player or Quicktime (from CD, Hardrive and streaming) the computer will freeze, resulting in a re-start. A real pain in the ass. But it doesnt happen when i play mp3 files or watch flash movies or even Google Video....

Can someone help me out here? Cheers.

Well, let's start with the simple things first. I would recommend that you try uninstalling*, running CCleaner to remove any temp files, and then reinstalling. If that doesn't fix the problem with WMP and QT, post back.

*To uninstall WMP, follow these steps:
1. Open Control Panel
2. Double click add/remove programs (you can remove QT from here)
3. Hit alt+w or simply click the Windows Components section.
4. Scroll down and uncheck the box next to Windows Media Player

Apply your settings. To re-install, follow the same steps, this time putting a check mark next to WMP. I can't remember if this will install v 8 or 10, so you may have to update.


Or, if you're interested, you can ditch all the problems of these apps for VLC Media Player. This app is AMAZING. It has just about every codec you could ever need built in, so it plays everything right out of the box, so to speak. Its lightweight, and open source. If you're not too stuck on WMP and QT, then I recommend this.

 

Well I have unistalled QT, but i cannot uninstall WMP. I followed your steps to uninstall WMP but all it did was remove access to it from the Start Menu and Desktop. I am still able to play mp3 music on WMP, which sorta means I didnt install it after all. Any other ideas how to uninstall WMP.
