I would like to edit some Mpeg3 movie files that I have but Windows Movie Maker tells me that:

The file C:\Save\Movies\Work\Xc7-011ManOnFire.avi cannot be imported because the codec required to play the file is not installed on your computer. If you have already tried to download and install the codec, close and restart Windows Movie Maker, and then try to import the file again.

Now I have tried to install the coded via updating Windows Movie Maker and had no success. Also, I have the K-Lite codec pack installed and that does not seem to help (I should say that Windows Media Player will play the movie because if the K-Lite install but it did not seem to help Windows Movie Maker).

Can anyone suggest a direction to go in to solve this?

Lastly, thank you MajorGeeks! You folks are doing great work here and you help (past and hopefully present ;) ) is greatly appreciated!

It is possible that your WMM is unable to access the codec. MS can be funny that way. VirtualdubMod http://virtualdubmod.sourceforge.net/ is another avi editing program you might consider using.
