mpegsplitter.ax error message

We have a laptop that has started giving this error. It only seems to happen when we either make the desktop cons visible or open the desktop folder in Explorer.

When either of these occurs, there is a message that says Explorer has stopped working and must shut down. It then does so.

After a couple of these shut downs of Explorer, the mpegsplitter error message will appear.

We have had to recover this laptop after serious infections. The guru's in the Malware Forum have helped clean the system. They said that mpegsplitter has nothing to do with malware and that I should ask here in the Software Forum.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Seems like this is a common problem if you've installed any 3rd-party codec packages.

First, I suggest trying to unregister the problem file:

1. Open an elevated Command Prompt:

* Click Start.
* Click All Programs, then Accessories.
* Right click on the Command Prompt option.
* In the drop down menu which appears, click the Run as Administrator option.
* You may be asked for authorization. Click the Continue button if you are the administrator or insert the administrator password.

2. In the Command Prompt window, enter the following:

regsvr32.exe /u mpegsplitter.ax

3. Press 'Enter' to exit the prompt, reboot and see if your symptoms have changed.

You might consider uninstalling any codec packages you have on board.
