Mpr.exe (Not Responding) -Can't logon my pc

    First, my pc info:
    CPU: Intel Pentium
    IE: Internet Explorer 6.0.2800
WINDOWS VER: Windows ME 4.10 (Build 67766446) <<<--This is what I got from a scan with Registry Mechanic, which is odd because I use Win98SE.

    *

Now, yesterday everything was fine. Today when I turned my computer on it seemed to boot up properly, and when I got to the logon screen, where I enter my password, I typed the PW in, and clicked ok. I got the hourglass, and then....nothing. I waited about 45 seconds, then pressed Ctrl+Alt+Del and saw "MPR.exe (Not Responding)". I used the second computer in the house to go online and googled "mpr.exe" and saw that one potential solution would be to delete or rename all .pwl files. I used this solution, and attempted to log onto my computer again.

It was a repeat of the previous scenario, only this time when I pressed Ctrl+Alt+Del it was "Msgsrv32.exe (Not Responding)" I'm not having as much luck finding a solution to this problem as i did the mpr.exe problem, but I do know that they are related.

I am able to boot my computer into safe mode, but I couldn't get online in safe mode. Using MSCONFIG i was able to boot my computer into "diagnostic startup" and I'm online using it now, but everything looks wrong (it looks like i'm in safe mode, all the icons are huge, and my color is 16-bit.)

Someone has suggested that I reformat my computer, but I don't have access to any Windows software, so this isn't really an option for me right now. I'm crossing my fingers that this is going to turn out to be an ID10T error, and not something REALLY wrong with my computer.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

And if I've posted in the wrong forum, my apologies.

I neglected to mention that yesterday I downloaded two new programs, Registry Mechanic and Garbage Sweeper. I have a sinking feeling that one of these two progams might either be the problem, or that something got deleted that was necessary.

I have gone and attempted to do a windows update, but it says "There are no critical updates available at this time." so I assume this means that everything is ok there.

I have not installed any new hardware, nor am I having any hardware issues.

    just a quick update:

i've run every free online virus scanner i can find (HouseCalls, Panda, Rav, Symantec) and cleaned out everything that they found. i deleted garbage sweeper (that was just a shot in the dark, and crossing my fingers didn't make the computer magically work right.)

my color is still in 16 bit, with the Screen Area being 640X480 pixels. i tried to change these, and it asked me to reboot. when i booted i got a BSOD with a fatal exception in VXD cmuda, and then fatal exception in VXD NTKERN. my display looks like it is in safe mode, but at least i'm able to get online to search for help, and do the scans.

i know this problem is a little more serious than any i've had before, it's not like being hijacked...it's worse. i'm doing my best to be patient...i know someone will eventually be able to help me...or at least point me in the right direction.

wow, i think i might have actually fixed my own problem! i read somewhere that tweaking things a bit in msconfig might help.

so...i went in and on the General tab set it to a "Selective Startup." I had recently uninstalled AVG, and so i un-checked it in the Autoexec.bat tab. On the System.ini tab, i un-checked "Password Lists." And then on the Startup tab i un-checked several items that I don't use often, that really aren't necessary to my startup. I clicked apply...and then waited for the computer to reboot.

    *MAGIC!*

Everything LOOKS like it's back to normal, and everything is running smoothly. I hope that what i've done isn't the equivalent to putting a band-aid on a gunshot wound, and that I've actually corrected the problem.

If someone reads this and sees that I have done something wrong, or has any other information or useful advice, please, by all means, let me know!

    Thanks ;)

    back to square one.

when i rebooted my pc, it went right back to the original problem. so, obviously me 'tweaking' msconfig did nothing, really.

so, back to patiently waiting for someone that knows more about this than i do.

perhaps someone could point me in another direction? i'd really like to get this problem fixed.

the problem with my computer has gotten worse, even when the computer is booted into diagnostic mode i can no longer get online. i can't get any of my ISP software to load (netzero, juno or even aohell.)

i opened the computer today and used a can of compressed air to dust it out (it was pretty bad) and it makes me wonder if there's a possibility that the dust that was on my cpu didn't damage it somehow? (don't laugh, i'm not a geek.)

is there not ANYBODY that can offer some sort of help????

i really hate talking to myself...but since nobody is answering me that seems to be what i'm doing.

i've tried a lot of 'solutions' for this problem, some of which i found on the Micro$oft website, and nothing seems to be working to fix my computer.

i used DrWatson last night and all 'he' said was "The file sisgr.drv is not digitally signed." from what i (think i) know this is a driver for my SiS video card. so i'm going to download a new copy of this driver and delete the old one.

in my device manager i've got a red X on one of my DMA controllers, and from what i (think i) know about this...that's REALLLLY not good news.

i need a geek hero...and so far i can't seem to get ANYBODY to even say "sorry sigh, i can't help you with this problem!" how frustrating.

maybe the problem is that i'm calling it mpr.exe when it's actually MPREXE.EXE??

so the problem is still here: when i try to boot the computer up in normal mode, it seems to boot fine...goes past the splash screen...and then when it gets to the screen where i have to enter my password...as soon as i enter my password, i see the hourglass...and then it freezes up. if i click ctrl+alt+del i see that mprexe.exe is not responding. i've also had the same problem, but instead of being pmrexe.exe is not responding it was msgsrv32.exe is not responding.

i've tried a LOT of different fixes for this: most recently i updated a few drivers and also made sure that windows was completely updated.

i noticed that around the same time my computer started acting up, that AOHell installed a "Wan Miniport (ATW)" with the files wanatw and wanatw4.sys. i have no idea what they are, or why i would need them. i was having trouble with AOHell 9 security edition, so i went back to 8.

i'm able to boot the computer into diagnostic mode by forcing the computer to not load a lot of files it usually boots (including AOHell software, platforms for chat programs, and a patch for windows, among the 20 i skipped.)

DrWatson says there is nothing wrong, but i think he's mistaken.

    and still...i'm talking to myself.

OK, the file concerned is definitely a windows protocol and controls the way 98 & ME handles, indeed allows, multiple networking protocols.

As to the WAN Miniport, I assume you are on Broadband? If you are then you are part of a Wide Area Network, I also assume you are using a modem rather than a router, and that it's USB.

Of course one should never assume, but if these assumptions are correct then we know where the problem probably lies.

If you can please go here and download this, it would help if we had your actual specs.

    http://majorgeeks.com/download4181.html

Also could you go to Control Panel, Network Connections and let me know which protocols are enabled, that'll do for a first step.

Edit: Sorry Tim, didn't see you there mate, if you have this under control I'll gladly step out. :D

hi, g1l, and thank you for replying!

i attempted to post here a few minutes ago, but my IE froze up, and i had to reboot. this computer is behaving terribly, it's like a different computer with every bootup. this boot i have sound in the modem, but not anywhere else, and the previous boot i had sound in my programs, but no sound in the modem?

i downloaded the Everest program, and you asked for specs but you weren't specific, so if i post too little, i can add to it, and if i post too much, many apologies.

i don't use broadband, but i use a modem for dialup.

as far as i know i have no network protocols on this computer, it's not on a network.

i viewed the link you gave in your second post, so i know a little bit more about what i'm up against, and i did try to extract those dll's and the mprexe.exe from the Win98 cd, but these files are in use by Windows, so i don't know of any way to force them in. (the only file i was able to extract and use was rnanp.dll, all the others were in use.)

it's 430 am here, so i'll be offline for a while, but now that you've at least replied to my question, my patience threshold has been extended indefinately, so there is no rush.

(just as an aside, if i ultimately have to reformat my computer and start over, then i guess i'll just have to take my lumps, but this is going to be the absolute last possible option for me. i've got over 220MB of photographs on my computer, and no possible way to back them up unless i store them online, but since i'm on a dialup connection and a 2mb file takes 10 minutes to download, i hate to think how long it would take me to store all the data i want to store.)

If you go to Control Panel , networking or network connection, (sorry 98's been a while:) ), you should be able to find a list of Protocols, for a start you must have TCP/IP or no internets. (sic)

In the meantime have a look at this.

ok when i go to control panel and network, the following network components are installed: DialUp Adapter, DialUp Adapter #2 (VPN Support), Microsoft Virtual Private Networking Adapter, SiS 900 PCI Fast Ethernet Adapter, and WAN Miniport (ATW). **when i saw that you said 'no tcp/ip no internet', of course, since i'm SOOO intelligent ;) i clicked ADD, and then Protocol, then TCP/IP...and it added several things all by itself? NDISWAN x2, TCP/IP dialup adapter x2) and i don't know if PersonalWebServer was there before or not.

My Primary Network Logon is Windows Logon, but i do recall seeing something else there before.

..why am i awake at 5:10 am?

also...thanks for the link. i've got a little bit of knowledge under my belt, i went about 3/4 of the way through a Net+ certification class, and about 1/2 way through an A+ certification class...for all the good either of them did me. *sigh*

Ok, we'll have to go through those connections anyway at some point. Do you use a VPN?

Anyhoo, could you download and run this and pm me what it tells you, this will give me an idea of the software setup as well. All info please, (apart from personal info which you should always edit out in public posts), if it's any consolation I don't think we're very near to the reformat stage at all.

just thought i'd put this in here, in case it's of any significance.

about 30 minutes ago i was chatting (playing hangman) with the SmarterChild bot on AOHell, and within about 30 seconds i got a BSOD with this message:

"An exception 0E has occurred at 00xx:yadayada in VxD AFVXD (01) +
00yadayada. This was called from 00xx:yadayada in VxD NDISWAN (01)+
00yadayada. It may be possible to continue normally."

this is the first time i've ever seen this error...so i don't know what to make of it. maybe someone else will.

    thanks.

i'm pretty sure i have the time frame of when this problem started, so i searched my comptuer for files that were modified or created during that time (March 13)...and i found this little file...and i think it might have something to do with my current problem, but i don't know what it is, or what it belongs to.

    maybe someone else does?

and to answer the question from several posts back, no i'm not on a VPN. this computer shouldn't be networked to anything at all...and as far as i know it isn't. (ironically enough, this all got started about the time that i was attempting to clean some garbage out of my computer using RegistryMechanic and Garbage Sweeper...because i was planning to get DSL and network the two computers in the house.)

...sorry...getting itchy to get my computer working properly. ;)

Hmm, don't like the look of that file and it's all a little too coincidental.

First things anyway is we need to clear out your network connections, if you are on dial up you do not need all the VPN stuff and especially all the stuff with (2), that is second copy, around it.

Can you find your network connection properties, and post a screen shot of the protocols you have installed.

Sorry to be vague, haven't used 98 in a while, if nobody else 98 savvy steps in I'll install it on a partition and take a look

ok...first things first. when i click on Network in my control panel i get a pop up telling me "Your network is not complete. Do you want to continue?" i click Yes and then the two images show what network components are installed.

(only 2 images can be uploaded at a time..)

next, if i click on the first one "Dial-Up Adapter" the next two images show you what i see there.

i realize that none of it says protocols...but this is all i've got.

OK, you need to remove a few things, get rid of Dial up adapter #2, Microsoft Virtual Network etc, and WAN miniport and could you then post another screen shot, I need to see exactly what is going on in there.

ok, i attempted to delete everything except Dial-Up adapter and SiS 900 PCI Fast Ethernet Adapter, and when i clicked ok i got an hourglass...and then nothing. i thought everything was ok, but none of my programs were responding and i couldn't get back into the Network settings, so i rebooted. when the pc came back on, everything was just as it was before i tried to delete it. all the components are back. did i do something wrong?

OK, let me think about this for a while, you said that now you had a response there was no rush yes?

I'll install 98 onto a partition and have a little play, I'll get back to you and I'm sure someone else will step in, darn time differential :)

    *Bump*

thanks g1l, i really appreciate your help, and that you're going above and beyond the call to do it! so far as i can tell you're the only person who's made an attempt to help me, and yes, now that i've got a geek ;) on the case...i'm in no rush. i know it will eventually be worked out.

and yeah, the time difference is a bugger...sleep? who needs it! ;)

ok g1l...i know you are asleep...but i've had a bit of a breakthrough. (but since you're the only one attempting to help me i'll write it to you anyway.) i don't know how much it's going to help...but i can't tell you how happy i am to finally know WHAT is causing the problem.

through a process of trial and error, and about 25 reboots, i was able to figure out EXACTLY what was in my startup that was causing me not to be able to get past the password field when booting up my computer. it's AOL ACS Daemon, whatever that is. hopefully SOMEONE will know, and tell me how to get rid of it.

i was able to log into the user Administrator, and i've got all my settings back, and everything finally looks right. i still get hung when i'm rebooting, though. the computer freezes and then i get a popup telling me that "this program is not responding" but there isn't a name at the top of the popup, so i don't know WHAT is not responding.

hopefully this piece of information will help. (ignore all my rambling, i'm happy!)

All the research I've done on this seems to revolve around Hijack This maybe fixing it.

I know nothing about AOL per se but I think if you go to the spyware forum and do the HJT thing and submit your log there are some very skilled people in there.

If no luck, get back to me.

thanks for all your help, and i'll try the spyware forum later today...i've got to get some sleep (now that it's 5 am). this has been one of the most frustrating problems i've ever come across with this computer, but i'm glad that i didn't do what about 10 people said to do..."reformat!"

i really appreciate what you guys do here, you made this girl very happy! ;)
