    Hello- Could I please get some help ridding my XP system of this AppData file named Microsoft Antimalware? It is keeping me from backing up my HDD. It is a remnant from that Microsoft Security Essentials program I had tried a while back.
    Thanks!

    Download the latest version of MGtools and save it to your root folder. Overwrite your previous MGtools.exe file with this one. Run the exe file and attach the C:\MGLogs.zip.

    OK, 'TimW', will do!... I don't see the need to overwrite, though. I don't have an installation of MGTools- I don't think!
    Thanks!

    Give me the full path to the file you want to remove.

    Thanks for the reply. Here is one of the file paths:

    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Microsoft Security Client

    The other one, 'C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Microsoft Antimalware', I was finally able to get rid of.

    The first one, I get a window that says 'Cannot delete Microsoft Security Client. Access is denied'.

    All of this came about when I decided to try MSSE. It started acting up, so I uninstalled it. The problem is that it left some things behind.

    I have since renewed my subscription for avast! Internet Security 2012.

    Thanks!

    You can try using Revo Uninstaller to remove that program.

    If that doesn't work:

    Download The Avenger by Swandog46 to your Desktop.

    See the download links under this icon http://forums.majorgeeks.com/chaslang/images/MGDownloadLoc.gif
    Extract avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop.

    1. Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    2. Click OK at the warning to continue to use The Avenger
    3. Do not change any of the check box options!
    4. Shut down your protection software now to avoid possible conflicts.
    5. Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it into the Input script here: part of The Avenger
    6. Now click the http://img33.imageshack.us/img33/9159/executeavenger.jpg button
    7. Click Yes to the prompt to confirm you want to execute.
    8. Click Yes to the Reboot now? question that will appear when The Avenger finishes running.
    9. Your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    10. A log file from The Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt and it will pop-up for you to view when you login after reboot.
    11. Attach this log to your next message. (See: HOW TO: Attach Items To Your Post )

    Let me know how it goes.

    Thanks, 'TimW'. First of all, it is NOT a program I am dealing with. It is a file, and I figured out how to get rid of it. I use Revo exclusively for program removal, and I am quite happy with it.
    I will keep the 'Avenger' in mind. Thanks for your help.

    Here's what I get when trying to run Avenger, per your instructions- see attachment.
    Well, it won't attach! It is a .bmp file!

  10. timw128

    timw128 Corporal

    Essentially, it says that it is an Invalid Script.

    There is nothing wrong with the Avenger script. Have you managed to remove the folder?

    No, I haven't been able to get rid of the Microsoft Security Client file. It is not allowed. Avenger, for what ever reason doesn't work for me, either. As I mentioned, I get a warning stating that it is an Invalid Script. I did everything exactly as you instructed me to do in terms of downloading Avenger, extracting it, running 'avenger.exe', disabling avast! Internet Security 2012, etc. I even took a Screen Shot of the Warning, but for whatever reason, I wasn't allowed to attach here. Go figure!...LOL! ;)
    Any advice- suggestions?...

    Download ComboFix to your desktop, but don't run it.

    * Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
    If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    * Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    * If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    * Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below code box into it (make sure you scroll all the way down in the code box to get all lines selected ):
    Code:
    ClearJavaCache::
    KILLALL::

    Folder::
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Microsoft Security Client

    Quit::

    * Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    * At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    * You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    If it asks you to overide the previous file with the same name, click YES.
    * Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif
    * Follow the prompts.
    * When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    * I will ask for this log below

    Note:

    Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

    Note: If after running Combofix you discover none of your programs will open up, and you recieve the following error: "Illegal operation attempted on a registry key that has been marked for deletion". Then the answer is to REBOOT the machine, and all will be corrected.

    Attach the log, please.

    I'll try and Attach a shot of the Docs & Sett'gs path and the Avenger Warning again.
    No, it won't attach here at Major Geeks. Is it my System or an issue with the MG Attachment procedure. I have never had this issue here before.
    OK, I just received your instructions on ComboFix. I'll follow through and post upon completion.

    Tim- Did as you requested. Some things happened during the execution of ComboFix that I do not understand.

    1) A warning was issued that I needed to disable Microsoft Security Essentials

    2) 'A MSSE scanner is still running.'

    I did shut the avast! Internet Security 2012 down. Furthermore, the file 'Microsoft Security Client' is gone. However, when ComboFix was deleting this file at the end of the run, a banner flashed across the taskbar regarding some place called AUSMotive and a 3M product(?)

    I will attempt to attach the ComboFix .txt log now.

    Thanks!

    Not sure what those items are, but you can now uninstall Combo:

    If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)

    Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
    "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall

    Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
    This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.

    Thanks, Tim- I uninstalled it right after I had submitted the log to you.
