I am unable to make a Automated System Recovery using MS backup and write to a DVD. The error message is "The backup filename could not be used. Please insure a valid path and that you have sufficient access. " Backup will write to a floppy, but it will not have enough space. I am running XP Pro SP2, the drive is a Liteon SMH-165H6S.

OK thanks,Backup won't handle optical media. When I did the ASR it backed up most every file on my system, so using floppies is out. Can I ASR backup to the hard drive and then copy DVDs without causing a reformat problem on the hard drive due to a hidden file? Is there a better alternative? I am trying to back up the system files before I update to SP3.

Doing a backup before installing a service pack is definitely a good idea!

I would backup to a separate partition, or even a separate external HD.

Another solution would be to use a backup program (like Acronis) that can backup to CD/DVD.

Maybe there are free backup programs out there that can do that?
