    Hello,

I have a Microsoft Basic Optical Mouse 1.0A which I have been using for the past four years. Now I am facing the foll problem:

    1. When i am starting my system (Win XP), the mouse gets activated.
    2. It stays activated for about 10 seconds or so and then the power goes off from the mouse.
    3. If I remove the mouse from the USB port and then re plug it there, the mouse again gets the power.
    4. The power stays for abt 10 or 15 seconds and then the mouse dies yet again. This cycle continues.
    5. Sometimes the message comes, "USB device not recognised" and sometimes the message comes "your USB device is installed and is ready for use".
    6. Device manager shows Mice and other handheld devices and after a while the entry vanishes.
    7. There is one heading in the device manager called 'human interface device' which shows with a yellow exclamation mark. Trying to uninstal and reinstal it allows me to use the mouse for the next 15 seconds before eventually freezing.
    8. When i am looking into the Mouse section in Control Panel, it shows as if no mouse i attached and properties show "Cannot start device, error code (10)" and at other times "Code 45".
    9. There was a solution provided in the Windows website (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/321122) which deals with deleting registry keys and reinstalling the device. But even that has failed.
    10. There is nothing wrong with the mouse as such because when I am plugging the same mouse into another system, it is working perfectly.
    11. I have downloaded the latest drivers from the microsoft website.
    12. I have tried using a mouse from Lenovo, but even that gives exactly the same problem.
    13. I have tried attaching my camera to the USB port and it worked fine.

Please help me in installing my mouse properly. My PC is abt 4 years old and it has never had this kind of probem before. Is it possible that the error is not a software issue but a voltage problem. If at all that be so, then how may it be corrected?

    Regards.

Just to add to the above, one of my friends suggested that this may be casued by insufficient voltage regulation and erratic power supply to the USB ports. My camera worked fine. I couldnt test with my pen drive cause the pen drive isnt working fine. Can someone please suggest something to this please?

    Hi

Is this the same PC you have had to reformat? if so then are their any Yellow ! Marks in Device Manager? if so what are they by?

It can be possible if you have not installed the chipset drivers when re-installing the OS that some USB devices are not correctly identified by the OS, so install the chipset drivers for your motherboard if not done so already.

Dont know if you've tried this yet, I know you have tried the registry changes but uninstall any mouse software drivers you installed and then from Device Manager uninstall your Mouse, then unplug it and turn off your PC, not a reboot, then plug mouse in and reboot.

    Hello,

    1. Yes please. This is the same PC that I had to reformat.
    2. There is a yellow exclamation mark under the heading USB Human Interface Device which is under the node Human Interface Devices.
    3. This problem existed even before the reformat had taken place. The reformat was for getting rid of a Trojan attack. But this problem was there from even before, except that it wasnt as bad as it is now. At that time, after the initial hiccups the mouse would stabilize and I would be able to use it properly. Now, it is turning into a piece of stone within 10-15 seconds of bootup.
    4. No mouse softwares have been installed on my PC. The one that I downloaded from the Microsoft webiste has been uninstalled.
    5. In the Device Manager there is no entry called Mouse or Mice at all.
    6. Just to be very sure can you please provide step by step direction as to where and how are those chipset drivers to be installed from? I do have a CD from Intel which was given to me when I bought the PC. This CD has already been run. Is it possible to do a Control+F to find out if the chipset drivers have been installed or not?
    7. Please give further guidance.

    Regards.
