I am on Windows XP Pro SP2. I go to start->run->cmd. All it does is flashes a command prompt window. What is wrong here? Do you need more information?

No answer? It's already on the third page, so I think it *just might* be ok to bump it up?

I can't find that in Start->Programs->Accessories. And it still doesn't work. But when I go onto another profile, it gives me an error (something about an illegal operation). I don't know what's going on... :(

In Start, run try typing in command.com or cmd or cmd.exe

In your C:\WINDOWS\system32 folder, do you have a file cmd.exe? That is the command window's executable.

BTW, do you have full admin privileges?

Ok. Command.com works, cmd.exe works, and yes I have cmd.exe in my system32 folder. Hmm... they don't just flash, they both stay up, but ping and chdir and other things I try don't do anything... ???

    (Yes I have admin rights)

    Is this what's happening?

Q: I'm trying to run ipconfig but the problem is that the command prompt window flashes on my screen for a brief second then disappears. How do I get it to stay on the screen long enough so I can read it?

A: This can happen when you are running the ipconfig command from the "Run" box. Instead run ipconfig at the command prompt. Click Start, Run, and type "cmd" (without quotes) and press ENTER. At the command prompt, type ipconfig and press ENTER. If you want to run ipconfig from the "Run" box, type cmd /k ipconfig.

Go to the link below, scroll down to #228 on the right-hand side and run Restore CMD.EXE.

Save the REG File to your hard disk. Double click it and answer yes to the import prompt.

Hmmm... I just looked in my WINDOWS->system32 folder and found a cmd that is a MS DOS file. I deleted that and used run->cmd and it worked... Also, I looked for ping and found another MS DOS file and deleted that. Now ping works...

    Wierd. :p
Thanks for the help, but I think it's fixed now. At least now I know how to fix it if it happens again!

To make sure all your vital files are OK, what I would do is run System File Checker.

Go to Start, run and type in sfc /scannow (There is a space after sfc )

You will need your Windows CD.
