MS IE 6 SP1 in Add/Remove Programs list: Normal in XP?

I've been working with a friend who had the about:blank hijacker. We seem to have cleared all of the nasties, but now when he dials up and a connection is confirmed from his ISP, his IE won't bring up any pages. He just gets the old black-and-white "This page ..." message page.

I'm thinking we'll try repairing his Winsock settings, but first, I'd like to try repairing his IE. But his XP Add-Remove doesn't LIST "Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 SP1" as mine does, so he can't click that and get the option to Repair.

Does he have to edit the "hide" words out of sysoc.inf to get the IE entry in his Add-Remove list? Isn't it supposed to be there from day one?

(Oh, and I'd welcome other ideas on what to do if his ISP confirms they have a connection, and ipconfig shows him with an IP address, and his firewall shows an IP address, and he has Generic host set correctly in the firewall settings, and all virus and spyware detectors find zero (now!), but his IE won't bring up any pages.)

IE 6 is integrated, it won't allow you to reinstall that way.

It should not be listed in add/remove.

If you want a way to reinstall it, go through this:

    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=318378

    Method 2.

Does he have SP2 yet? SP2 makes it sooooo easy to repair the winsock.

So howcum I have it sitting there, perfectly well-behaved, in MY Add-Remove Programs panel, and if I click on the Change/Remove button, I get a pop-up that offers me the OPTION to REPAIR IE 6???

That's what I want said FRIEND to have as an option!

    Hi Wizewiz
I Agree with Adryn it should not be listed in Add/Remove programs

You should however be able to locate the ie.inf file do a search making sure you check the box to search hidden files...
Once found right-click and select install, reboot once finished

    Couldn't tell you why.

Its definately an exception, not the rule.

Hey! Wow! I have an exceptional machine!

I'll bet I got the entry there by editing the sysoc.inf file a couple of years ago.

Oh, well. Friend has figured out a solution and all is well WITHOUT repairing IE 6, so, many thanks, m'frenns. You're a prize lot of rescuers-when-needed.
