While my MS IE is working fine, whenever I attempt to open a page that indicates "IE provided by America Online", it will not open. I get the hour clock that stays there indefinitely. Any help would be appreciated.

Sorry, I see that all IE is provided by AOL. For some reason, whenever I attempt to open another window from within a main web site that uses IE AOL, I get the above problem. All is fine using Firefox.

In trying to be more specific about the problem, I can get to this forum through IE, but if I click on a site, for example a download that that someone has included within a thread here, IE cannot open it. I just get a clock that sits there indefinitely. Any help would be appreciated.

I'm a little confused here. If AOL is not your ISP, and you unistalled AOL, removed IE and installed IE6SP1. You should have nothing on your system that is AOL related.

Anytime I use IE, the top of the page always gives the web site name, followed by MS IE provided by America Online. But you're right, AOL is not my ISP. I have Forefox, but don't care for it as it is much slower then IE.

Check your Internet Explorer settings, make sure something isn't checked that should be unchecked. Best to reset all yo IE settings back to default.

How do I do that, Dude?

Right-Click on the Internet Explorer Icon on the Desktop, select Properties. Click-0n the Security tab, click-on the Default Level button. Next click-on the Privacy tab, under Settings make sure the slider is set to Medium. Click-on Apply, then click-on OK.

    Empty your Internet Cache.

Firefox should be faster than IE, unless you're running an older (ie: 233MHz) computer. You can speed it up quite dramatically using Firetune, which can be found here:

I just posted a new thread before I saw this one. I just installed firefox and now my ie explorer or related browsers, avant, won't open web pages. The browser will open, but web pages won't. Now firefox is the only browser that works. Thats fine except my banking won't work with firefox.

  13. stealth2920

Thats why I attempted to use ie which no longer works since I installed Firefox.

  14. Jud149

    That didn't help either.

My IE worked fine (with Firefox also installed) for several days until today. My banking sites won't work with Firerox either, which is another reason I don't like it.

    I just deleted all Firefox/Mozilla items-no help!

To reiterate my problem, I can open any web site with IE. The problem is opening another web site by clicking on a new website within the one I just opened. In other words, I get to this forum with no problem, but if I click on a website contained in a thread, it locks up with the hour clock. A specific example is that I cannot open the site suggested by Wavetar below. I'm not sure what the tech wording for this is.

How do you uninstall ie explorer? Maybe if we uninstall ie, then reinstall maybe a file got zapped.

    Jud149 First Sergeant

Actually, I tried that. I downloaded a new version from MS and uninstalled the old. It didn't help. As a side note, MS says you cannot uninstall IE. However, my old version is gone from the add/remove files. Thanks for trying, Stealth!

Didn't work for me either. I don't know why installing firefox (in my case)would stop IE from opening web pages. I really might not care as I like firefox, but how would I get windows updates without IE. I really don't want to reinstall windows XP or reformat over IE. I researching other sites also so if I get a clue to either of our ie issues, I'll advise you.

Thanx, Stealth. To give you a little background, I've been having problems with my Windows '98 system the last couple of weeks. (BTW, SPD of this forum has been extremely helpful in fixing several items for me). There seems to be some malware within but nothing seems to rid it. I'm been working with BJ for several days now in the spyware forum, but we don't seem to be getting anywhere. I keep getting CWS crap in my registry which keeps coming back after deletion. I don't know if this IE problem is related.
Anyway, I have a good registry I can restore, Feburary, that I may opt for. If that doesn't work, I'll probably go back to day one with my system. I don't like doing either, but I'm spending too much time with these problems.

Jud149, you really need to stay out of your registry. If the stuff your are talking about, is in a long list of what looks like web sites. They are supposed to be there. When you immunize your system with Spybot and SpywareBlaster, these entries are added to your registry to protect the system.

Run CCleaner to clean the temp files and Internet cache.

  23. Jud149

    Jud149 First Sergeant

Are you saying that the CWS and porn stuff in my registry is put there when I immunize with Spybot? No one has told me that on the spy forum when I told them I was deleting such items. Anyway, that being the case, the only problem I have now is this dad gum IE. BTW, I did use CCleaner but still the IE problem.

I got this info from a windows doctor web site. I used the first option and my ie now works perfect. Don't know if it will work for your system though.

    Repair Internet Explorer 6
A number of XP users have reported situations with Internet Explorer 6 becoming corrupted and reporting a number of different errors. While there is certainly no guarantee, the two procedures listed below have restored functionality to IE6 for many users experiencing problems.

Note: Both methods listed require that the Microsoft Windows XP CD-ROM be available.

Method 1: Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.x Repair for Windows XP

From the Start menu, select Run.
In the Open field, type sfc /scannow (Note: There is a space between sfc and /scannow)
    Select the OK button.
Follow the prompts throughout the System File Checker process.
Reboot the computer when System File Checker completes.
Method 2: Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.x Repair for Windows XP

From the Start menu, select Search, select All Files and Folders.
Select More Advanced Options and place a checkmark beside Search Hidden Files and Folders option.
Ensure that Search System Folders and Search Subfolders are also checked.
In the All or Part of the File Name box, type ie.inf
In the Look In drop-down menu, select C: or the letter of the hard drive that contains the Windows folder.
    Click the Search button.
In the search results pane, find the ie.inf file located in Windows\Inf folder.
Right click the ie.inf file and click Install on the context menu.
Reboot the computer when the file copy process is complete.

You are right as usual, Dude. I just checked my registry and it was clean of CWS. I then immunized with Spybot and it came right back after reboot. I feel like an idiot and sure wish I had know this before. Any other ideas regarding my IE problem?? Thanks again!

Thanks for the info, stealth! Glad you got your IE fixed. I've got Windows '98, but if you could give me the address of that site, I'll check it out. Thanks again.

    Jud149,

I agree with SPD, this is a little confusing. I am not sure about the whole AOL thing but if you are having problems opening another web page in IE after clicking on a link, try the Mcrepair.exe tool below. This works very well on W98 systems.

    http://download.microsoft.com/download/msninvestor/patch/1.0/win98/en-us/mcrepair.exe

    1. When prompted, save this file to your Desktop.
    2. Double-click the Mcrepair.exe file.
    3. Click Yes to any messages that appear. (very important)
    4. Restart the computer.

Zone Alarm. I've tried shutting it down, but it doesn't help.

I'm a little shocked, but that fixed the problem. Thank you very much. I say shocked because while loading I got a message saying it was already installed but that it was a later version. Then I got several other error messages, the last of which said "fatal exception, etc." Any idea of what was wrong with my IE, Steve.
As far as confussion re AOL, whenever I open a web page, the top always reads the web sites name, followed by Microsoft Internet Explorer provided by America Online. I no longer use AOL and have deleted all that I could find from my system.
I see that you're a Vol. I'm a Cornhusker fan and have been for many years. I hope you guys have a great year (as long as you don't play the HUSKERS and beat them at year end). Can't wait for the season to start. Thanks again, Steve.

Try going to Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Information, click on Tools and select the Internet Explorer Repair Tool.

You will have to restart after running it.

I'm all wired up for the season, can't wait. Good luck to the Cornhusker's. :)

Tried that, Steve, and after clicking on "system Info" I got the following: the drive or network connection that the shortcut system information.ink' refers to is unavailable. Make sure the disc is properly inserted or network resource is available and try again.

Try this, Click Start, click Run, type "msinfo32.exe" (without quotation marks) in the Open box, and then click OK.

I have to get off for awhile, if you manage to reach System Info with my limited knowledge of 98, you might also run the System File Checker and Registry Checker.

Good luck and let us know how it goes.

Hey Jack, I deleted Firefox because it was much slower than IE. I have Windows '98 which I guess is the problem. What system are you running since the Firetune helped?

Using XP home, Jud. I use FF almost exclusively. Works well on 2K also. If I had a 98 would upgrade to 2k or XP Worth it, even if you have to buy the new OS.

Can you now reach the sites and open other web pages by clicking on links? Are you still getting the Fatal Exception error? If so, what does it say.
