    Hi

I have used MS Money 2005 for some considerable time and apart from the odd problem it has been 100% stable until a couple of days ago.

After waking my laptop (a Samsung S3511 running Windows 7 Home Basic) in the morning I tried to access my data files and got the error shown below in uploaded file:

I have backups of the data files on external memory sticks and usually any problem is resolved by accessing the backups.....but not in the is case as I get the same error.

The data files are OK as I can access them from my Money installation on my Desktop PC.

I have uninstalled Money and then reinstalled using the latest download from http://moneymvps.org/downloads/files...05-UK-QFE2.exe. I have tried SAFE MODE install and Administrator but same problem exists.

I am assuming it is some sort of Registry problem and would be grateful for any advice on how to identify and cure the problem.

    Thanks in anticipation.

Could you try copying a copy of the files to your main drive? Try them from there perhaps. Just something I might try if the files are not too large.

The error seems to indicate that something has messed up the permissions of the files so that they are read only for your user account. I wonder if your security is blocking access to the remote/flash drive. Security programs can be a little bit unpredictable when dealing with flash drive/remote drive policy.

I use a program that allows me to set permissions for files on a drive. I can choose what programs/applications can access various remote drive locations. Then some security will just block access of programs to flash drives. Bullguard I know blocks autorun and other remote drive activity, but I know others do too.

It could be a permissions issue. Try giving yourself explicit read/write permissions to "D:\money files".
    1. Launch Windows Explorer
    2. Go to drive D:
    3. Right-click on the "money files" folder
    4. Select "Properties"
    5. Click on the "Security" tab
    6. Click [ Edit... ]
    7. Select your name from the "Group or user names" list (if your login name isn't there, click [ Add... ] and add it)
    8. In the "Permissions" section, give yourself "Full control"
    9. Click [ OK ]
Try it now and see if it Money works correctly. I've had to do this with a few apps in Windows 10 even though my account is in the Administrators group, due to 10's attitude of "you're an administrator, but you're not really an administrator".

Thanks for the reply. This does seem to be the problem but as an added precaution I have have set Run As Administrator.Fingers crossed this fixes the issue for the future.

    Thanks again
