One of my friend's prefers this http://www.libreoffice.org/ after testing a few free Office alternatives (OO, KingsoftOffice, Softmaker Office)
Note: all the OpenOffice developers left and are now working on this program. There is a new version out and all the old coding (OO) bloat has been removed.

I use Libre Office as suggested by Plodr. It seems very stable to me and handles all of the MS formats that I have tried including the docx.

    Three main ones:

    1. OpenOffice.org - Writer icon

Writer, part of the Open Office suite, is an open-source word processor. It supports the ISO standard Open Document Format (ODF) for data interchange as its default file format, as well as Microsoft Office 97-2003 format ...

    2. Google Docs is a free, Web-based word processor offered by Google. It allows users to create and edit documents online while collaborating in real-time with other users.

Writer has all the features you need from a modern, full-featured word processing or desktop publishing tool. It's simple enough for a quick memo, but powerful enough to create complete books with contents, diagrams, ...

In the Open Office suite it's called Open Office Presentation. In the Kingsoft Office suite it's Kingsoft Presentation. Don't know what it's called in the Libre Office suite but I'm sure it has an equivalent.

I choose Kingsoft Office Suite Free 2012.

Until last week, I'd never heard of Kingsoft or this product. I had, however, tried all the usual freebie Microsoft Office alternatives: OpenOffice, LibreOffice, Lotus Symphony, Google Docs, and so on.They're all OK--good enough, certainly, for most users--but I'll admit I've become spoiled by Microsoft's interface and functionalities, and Kingsoft Office is highly similar with it.

And the free version is extremely capable, offering robust counterparts to Word, Excel, and PowerPoint--and file compatibility with all three. It doesn't support Visual Basic or macros, however, so if you're a power user, you might want to consider the $69.95 Pro version, which adds those features.

Thus, I support Kingsoft,it's Free,What have you got to lose by giving it a try.
