MS Publisher 2003 Keeps Crashing

I am running Windows XP Home with all of the current service packs and updates.

I have MS Office Professional Edition 2003 Academic Edition.

All programs from the suite are installed and the only program giving me problems is Publisher.

A few weeks ago, one of my clients sent me a Publisher file and when I opened the file I received an error message regarding the fonts contained in the file. I don't recall what exactly the error was except I had a choice of using the fonts and I said "Yes". The file opened fine and then I closed Publisher. Later, when trying to open the same file again I received an error that Publisher detected a problem and needed to close.

I have included a screenshot of some of the details of the error report.

This is what I have tried to correct the problem:

    1. Uninstalled and reinstalled Microsoft Office Suite
    2. Ran Detect & Repair
    3. Ran Microsoft Office Removal Tool and Reinstalled Microsoft Office
    4. Changed Registry settings as suggested in KB article
    5. Tried to start the program in Safe Mode.
    6. Tried to start the program after booting computer in Safe Mode.
    7. Ran Read & Run First scanning for viruses and malware. System is clean.

It doesn't matter if I click on a Publisher file or start Publisher with the .exe icon, the same thing still happens.

I read somewhere that printer drivers can cause Publisher to crash. However, Publisher was working fine with my recently acquired LexMark printer.

I am thinking I may need to wipe out and reinstall the system. I am only thinking this because that file I opened from my client may have been corrupt and affected the system files. What do I know?:confused

    Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Do you have a restore point from before the problem started?

I tried to list everything I had tried. Yes, I tried several restore points but it did not help.

    Thanks for the quick response.

Yes. I added the registry key as indicated in the KB article even though I did not have those updates listed in Add/Remove Programs.

The error message I got when I opened that received Publisher file specifically referenced a font problem.

You might try uninstalling using this:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301
in case your uninstall didn't get rid of the problem bit. You could also look for Outlook folders and delete them, and use CCleaner as well.
I suppose you have tried it with the printer disconnected. In fact, disconnect all USBs and the Internet as well, just in case.
Do you have a PC or laptop?

I did all of the above before reading this post. What I ended up doing was wiping out and reinstalling the system last night. Publisher now loads without problems. I guess it must have been a system file that was the culprit.

Now, I am just hoping that when I get the memory I ordered the other day from crucial.com that my computer will be a bit faster. [crossing fingers]

Thanks for all of your responses in trying to help me resolve this problem. :wave
