MS questionable installation

    Hello
Recently Secunia flagged a MS update MSXML so I tried the ‘solution’. Their solution could not fix the flagging.
I then went to the community where very courteous skilled administrators helped me, extensively.
I feel they did all they could but I still had some questions.
They provided a link which I clicked on but it was quite erratic and I had to tweak a few times to get to “successful installation” for Windows, and “successful” patch for Secunia.
I have kept the entire thread and also just the link on my desktop which I can produce if asked.I do not know if this was something I did not need and has been installed, if it was a false positive, or what really happened. I obviously hope all is as it should be as the machine seems to be working fine, now. I am out of state now and have yet to check out the desktop I performed this link on before I left.
If someone can join my brief investigation to find out if my machines are as they should I would appreciate it.
I wish I knew enough about software to handle this myself but at my level it is quite unclear.
As I said, Windows appears to be patched and Secunia reads 100%.
    Thank you for your interest

    Hi Peter

This is your Windows 7 PC?

AS your PC is looking ok now I would do nothing as it seems to tweak you did worked and see if this happens again at some point, if it did then I you likely suggest the below in the quote box of mine.

MSXML is a thing in which some may have it and some may have various versions, their is no real right or wrong as it depends on the applications you have installed, I only have MSXML 4.0 SP2 installed as that's likely all I need for a 3rd party application that calls on that applications service.

Thank you for the information and yes this is my Win 7 x 64 laptop. The same was done to the Win 7 x 64 desktop at home.
I have yet to go home and work on it.
Perhaps your suggetion below may be the answer rather than all the other tweaks.

In my laptop I have one MSXML entry which is - MSXML sp3 parser dated 4-24-11.
I don't know why the others are not there.
Shoud I remove whatever exists in either machine that says MSMXL and install the ones you gave me from this site ?

    Hi Peter

No as I mentioned earlier, you don't really need to install any or all of them (some are installed by default see ¹ below) , it depends on the applications and these will likely be 3rd party ones that need that component to work, in part MSXML is only needed in the versions you have as in the main they are application specific. If you where having issues still then the instruction I posted would be what I would suggest.

¹ MSXML is defaultly installed with some apps and Windows, XP SP3, Vista and 7 has MSXML 6.0 installed , it also comes with .Net 3.0, Visual Studio and SQL), quite a bit of XML is used in Office apps and Access is one as it takes over from the old COM addins.

    Hi D
I uninstalled the only MSMXL item in add/remove and rebooted.
I then was successful installing the links you gave which Windows had no updates for - good - and Secunia said was 100% - good.
However, although 6x64 and 4 were good, 6 said the following." Error installing log file. verify that it exists and is executable."
Because the two scan were successful. should I conclude this is done?
I would hope the same will apply to the desktop at home.

    Hi Peter

Just run Windows update again to check on MSXML 6.

    >>I ran update and it said all was updated.
I looked in add/remove and saw MSXML 4 there altho 6x64 was successful too.
I just noticed the KB# 973686 and could not find it in the history. I tried to run the link again and got the same error message.
    I will keep trying.

If Computer says I have sp1
should I be concerned with KB 973686 which has to do with sp2?

    Hi Peter

You should not be concerned on MSXML 6.0 if its listing as up to date and in Secunia the version installed is 6.30.7601.17.514 or above.

I shall leave all as is. Both scans are fine.
If the desktop scans are ok I will also not change anything there when I am home today.
