I'm not seeming able to download a certain "Important" MS Update (please see attached).

    This is what they say:

0x800B0100 TRUST_E_NOSIGNATURE No signature was present in the subject.

Something about me 'needing to get a "Readiness Tool"' from them (from April 2010) to apply this update (?).

I have tried at least 8-10 times to get it to work.

    Any ideas/suggestions/opinions/advice welcome...

    Thanks in advance,
    g...

Thanks Doc - but is that not what you're suggesting (what I attached in the first post), in the attachment?

    ;)

... but what was the message you received about this? What update were you advised to first download?

Too late to edit last post - I see now this update has failed more than 40 times since April - I am only just now aware of it in the last couple of days.

What could be the problem, please?

I am sure I am running SP2 (Vista Home).

It "seems" to be installing now (?) - MS requested/required WGA plug-in (which I was certain was already installed?) & Validation (which again, I don't understand because this machine has been validated previously).

    So, KB980248 is installing now (28.83MB) - I suppose we'll soon see...

g'day grc i have had to work on a couple of friends pc with vista who have had this same issue.try this navigate to control panel select administration tools then select services, locate and disable the windows updater service.
leaving this window open click on my computer then c drive then navigate to windows\software distribution\download folder and delete the contents of the folder, click back once and locate the data store folder open and locate the log folder then delete the contents of this folder also.close the window.
now restart the windows update service and close the services window.
before you retry to download and install the update SWITCH OFF THE REALTIME PROTECTION OF YOUR ANTIVIRUS.once the installation completes switch you antivirus back on.hope this help good luck.

Thanks & g'day to you i-w.d.u. - it appears I'll need to go with your plan here - I mis-spoke (mis-typed) - it "downloaded" but did not "install" (attached).

Not sure if I'll get this done tonight - if not, it may be about 15-16 hours before I'll get another chance...

<--OK - I'm good to here (please see above) - you're saying to delete the entire 180MB of this folder? And also, I peeked ahead, but do not see a "Data Store Folder" - can you advise please? - Thanks again, and in advance...

g'day grc yes delete the entire contents of this folder this is where the updates are downloaded and stored before they are installed.if there is a corrupt file it will cause the installation to fail.this will force windows updater to re-download the update again.
if download time is a problem before you delete this folders contents first try switching of the real time protection on your antivirus and try to install the update if this fails then try the procedure i have described.the other folder i have mentioned is where the logs for your updates are kept it also could be named just DB folder.these logs tell MS updater what updates you already have.
there seems to be an issue with windows update and some antivirus software preventing the installation of sp2 on vista.before the installation of the sp2 update you should get a eula form to tick agree to .if this does not pop up the update will fail.
    good luck

Well it didn't take (attached). I finally got the "Readiness Tool" (Hotfix-KB947821) downloaded AND installed, but I get the same error upon trying to update to KB980248.

I did read somewhere along the line that this Hotfix would only work on machines that needed it - but I don't understand why MS would "Recommend" an "Important" update to my machine if I didn't need it (if it wouldn't work)?

As far as SP2, I do have it - and have had it since it was first offered to me (a year or two ago?).

    Any other ideas...?

PS ~ From MS: "Important - This update is offered on Windows Update only to computers that have a condition that the tool could resolve." http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947821

I switched my real-time spyware protection from MS/WIN-Defender to Spyware Terminator about 10 days ago - I'm wondering if this (attached) could have anything to do with current issues (problems)?

It appears a Host Process for Windows Services (or three) was "Auto Denied"...
