I'm sure this is a simple thing for the Pro's around here. Anyway, the issue is that a computer in my office that I need to access a shared printer through comes up with a message, "The directory service is unavailable.", when I press the "Find Printer" button on the print window. Suggestions??

    Thanks in advance,

    George

Stupid question ...but got to ask ...is the computer that hosts the printer turned on and logged in?

    Tim,

Yes and yes. I wound up learning about a way around this by going to the printers and faxes icon in the control panel. I clicked on add a printer and followed the prompts. That set up my connection I needed, but still doesn't explain why I would get the message I did when I clicked on "Find Printer".

    Further thoughts?

I am not a network expert but I think it would be better if you post us the hardware (network drive for example) and software that connects the PCs.

I guess you have the printer setup as a shared printer in Control Panel > Printers & Faxes > Right click on the Printer in question > select Properties > select the Sharing tab and is Share this Printer checked?

    Just checking :)

any software firewalls on the PCs networked? if so turn off to test to see if you can see the shared printer as you may need to allow it past your firewall.

    Halo,

Yes the printer has been set up to share. The question is no longer functional but curiosity. Why does the printer work flawlessly with the computers on the network, but when one goes to the printer dialogue box and presses the "find printer" button, the message comes up about the directory service not being available. That's the answer I'm after.

    Thanks,

    George

Under your network properties, do you have client for microsoft networks?

    Halo and Tim,

I appreciate your efforts here. Unfortunately Halo, I'm not dealing with a server-based operation and therefore server-adjustable situation. Thanks for the info, though. It may come in handy should we expand enough to require a genuine server. As I mentioned before, we're pretty "small time" on the networking side of things. Which leads me to Tim's question. I apologize man. I'm not remembering where to check out the properties of the network.

If you still have some patience left, tell me where to look up the info and I'll do so.

    Thanks again,

    George

Double click network places and then click entire network ...alternately, click view netowrk connections ...right click the local network / properties ...should have client for microsoft networks..

Tim, thanks. I found it and it was already activated (checked)

    Other thoughts?

Are all the computers in the "same" workgroup ...and is there the same user profile on each computer? (and used at least once?).
