With a desktop at home, and one at the office, only one CPU is in use at any time. Hypothetically, if the same license key were used for each installation, would that cause any problems?

As I understand it, XP is liscenced for one computer, only.
A full retail version can be used on another computer, if the computer is the only one it is on, and any previous installation has been erased, only.

Yes, as mentioned one licence per PC, not matter if only one is in use at any one time, likely it would also fail WGA, due to the same key used on two PCs.

Re: MS Windows XP and Win 2000 License Questions

So, if Windows XP was installed on one boot drive, then that hard drive was removed... what needs to be done to re-install on another drive?

Same question for Windows 2000 Pro. I am now installing Win2K Pro on a new boot drive... old computer... using the product key as printed on the actual Win2K Pro sticker... and I get "invalid key" after installing. How could that occur? How can it be fixed? (That computer is not even connected to the internet, yet...)

If you are putting on an oem version of XP, you can reinstall it on another hard drive, on the same computer
If you wish to install 2000 pro , or, any Windows version, on a pc , and it refuses the serial number, it is always possible that you input a wrong digit - like 0 (ZERO) instead of O (letter O) , if after triple checking, this is not the case, then , if its legit, phone Microsoft, and tell them where you purchased it.
It sounds like you are installing 2000 Pro, as the boot , and XP, as the second system, on a seperate drive, which is the ideal way to run 2 systems, with the earlier version first (2000)on the C: drive/partition .
