    Hi all,

i have an issue with word 2003 on win7 pro.

my language is set to english, however, when i select 'text direction', the text direction box opens with the little demo windows showing how the text will be - and that is in chinese!

i haven't ever selected a non english language or anything - i'm about as chinese as pizza

..put a little pic in to show, its crazy!

    would appreciate anyones help

    Greetings, Bolts...

First of all: why is it that you're needing text direction? It's my understanding that this option is only available if Word is enabled with East Asian language support...you might try this:

With all of the Office 2003 apps closed, in Start=>Programs=>Microsoft Office Tools, use the Language Settings tool to add a Far East language, close then reopen the Language Settings Tool, and remove Chinese (or any of the languages you don't want)...restart Word (both normally and in Office safe mode [holding down the ctrl key]), and see if your symptoms change...

    Keep us posted...

You expect to see this http://word.tips.net/FigFiles/T1781F1.html
Your header says entire document. I think that's what you did wrong.
You need to select a cell and not the entire page or document.

@plodr: how's cell selection going to solve the Chinese problem?

Re: MS word 2003 text direction in text boxes issue

    thanks for the replies!

@Caliban - am actually doing some 'drawings' with labels on them - text boxes are used and some have vertical orientation. plodrs pic is exactly what i used to see. Used text direction for a long time like this. The attached pic is an indication of what I am doing.

@plodr- you're right - your picture is exactly what i was expecting. I have just had to build a new system and all i have done is re-install office 2003 - and this is the result. I wasn't very specific in my subject (sorry) - it is all about text direction in text boxes - I'm not actually trying to change my page to vertical text...

I'll look a the language setup, thanks so much for the input plodr and Caliban - I'll report back.

Caliban, if you choose cell selection, it allows you to rotate - English text the way you want it inside a small"text box" in a larger document. If you choose the entire document, then of course it expects that you want to use a language that is read right to left so Chinese appears.

Caliban - i have had a moment to play with the language settings area and removed the non english languages. this has resolved my text box issue. the 'demo box now has quick brown fox' or whatever, not chinese chars!

how it got there in the first place is a mystery - perhaps the wisdom of W7 install of office 2003!

many thanks for your help Caliban and plodr - always get great help on MG forums

    :)
