My computer at work runs Win98, and MS 2000SB is installed. I needed to add Access, and I used a MS 2000Pro disc to do it. Now I can't work in Word, even after uninstalling and re-installing and trying a repair. After the fact, I've been told I've confused the computer with 2 versions? Word comes up, and I can retrieve a document to look at, but I can't edit without the computer spitting out the "illegal operation" error and shutting down Word. Can anyone help me? I really need my files!!! This computer has several other applications, and no way can I reformat and start again....is there a repair?

If you can open word or excel and goto the Help menu you will find a Detect and Repair option, click that, you may need the Office CD in the drive if any files are needed.

If that doesnt work, you may have to uninstall all office components from both versions and re-install the one that covers all your needs, a possible way of installing Access as I'm sure without looking it doesnt come with Access is to Install Access from the Pro CD but choose custom install and change the default install location to something like C:\program files\Access 2000 then install Office 2000 SB but install it in the default location.

I never thought about changing the location of the Access files...just went with the default!!! I used Add/Remove Programs to remove Word, then re-installed the Pro version...no luck! I don't have the CDs for SB, which is what was originally installed (and what everyone else in the office has). My son says I probably haven't completely cleaned out all the old Word, but I don't know how to get rid of it? Thank you so much for helping...don't quit on me now!!!

I printed the article and brought it home to read. I'll experiment tomorrow to see if renaming the dot files will correct the problem. TechTrax wrote a very easy to understand article, and I appreciate your help...will keep you updated!

Matacumie, I started Word from the run command with winword.exe /a. Just typing in a new document caused the illegal error and shut down, just as before. I rebooted and tried again, this time opening up one of my saved files. When I tried to edit the date, the computer just froze up. I have located the original MSWordSB! Is there a way to clean out all the MSWordPro stuff before I try to re-install? I'll just be happy to go back to where I was before I tried to add Access. Thanks!!!

I downloaded the Ccleaner, and was shocked at how many temp files and cookies it got rid of! Then I uninstalled Pro and reinstalled SB, and so far so good. I was able to open my saved files, edit and re-save without crashing. If I'm able to catch up all my files tomorrow, I'll be a happy camper. Thanks to all you Major Geeks out there for helping!!!
