This really should be very simple but I can't figure it out and it's driving me up a freaking wall. Out of nowhere, when I open up a word document now there are these L shaped page margin markers on the print layout view and I can't get rid of them. Here's a link of a screenshot I took so you can see what I'm talking about: http://img171.imageshack.us/my.php?image=untitled1copyfr3.jpg

Please help a guy out with what should be a simple solution.

I beleive that is the margins, it shows you where the borders are, and what it will look like when it prints out. You can also add fancy pictures and stuff to the other side of those "L" things or the whole document.

Yeah that's fine but I don't want them there. It used to be just plain white. They're annoying the hell out of me. How do I get rid of them?

I just switched to Linux yesturday so I cant tell you exactly cause I dont have word on my computer anymore, but it has something to do eaither with the view you have it on, or an option setting to see margins or something like that .. hey wont show up on the document when you print it. Embrace the "L" homey!

I know it's gotta be somewhere in the options, but I've searched and I can't find it. That's why I'm posting here. Can someone else who has the program help me?

On the toolbar in the top left:

    Click View > Web Layout

This gives you a full blank page. You have it set on Print Layout.

No. I don't think you understand. I WANT print layout view. I DO NOT WANT the margin markers. They didn't used to be there.

    Go to:

File > Page setup > Margins

    Remove all the margins.

Once again. You're not reading everything I said. I want the margins, just not the markers. Look at the screenshot I posted.

    O.K.

Are you talking about the little grey lines above the cursor in your screenshot? I didn't see them the first time I looked at it.

Never seen them before. Do a repair install and see if they go away.

Yes, the grey things above the cursor on both left and right sides. I tried reinstalling and it didn't work.

    HI!
    Tools>Options>View
'Print and Web Layout options'>Uncheck 'Text boundaries' if it is checked.

Thanks Toni but that's not it either.

Try deleting your Nomal.dot file, closing down Word and re-opening it. It will auto-create another normal.dot, hopefully without those markers.

You can find normal.dot in your C:\Documents and Settings\<Folder you use for your stuff>\Application Data\Microsoft\Templates

Have you checked if you have any Borders or Shading turned on?

    Format > Borders and Shading

It could leave marks like that:confused:

Toni, I'm almost the same as that. I tried unchecking/checking any differences but they still didn't go away.

Birdbath, I check borders and shading and they're all off.

Lev, I can't find that folder or the normal.dot file. Application Data folder apparently doesn't exist on my computer?

Application Data is hidden folder by default. you will need to change your settings first to be able to view hidden folders and files. Open Windows Explorer and select <Tools> on the top bar, then <Folder Options>, <View> then scroll down to "Hidden Files and Folders" and check "Show" option. Then repeat the instructions below to delete normal.dot.

No luck there either Lev. Closed down word, deleted the file, restarted and they're still there. Sigh. Options are running out...

Have they always been there, or just recently appeared after playing with options in Word?

    Are you using Word 2003?

Just for the heck of it, have you tried a reboot? (can you tell I'm running out of ideas too?)

When I check the high-lighted box those little marks come up, when I uncheck it they go away.

When it comes to M$ nothing surprises me any more Lev.

This is what it looks like when I check the "Text Boundaries" box. http://img154.imageshack.us/img154/6589/untitled1copyft2.jpg It just puts more lines on the page borders. But even when I uncheck it those grey L shaped ones are still in the corners.

I haven't rebooted. Do you mean just restarting the computer? Yes I am using Word 2003. The marks in the corner just recently appeared. I don't think I changed any options, at least not intentionally. They never used to be there before. That's why I'm trying to get rid of them.

OK,that's what it looks like when I check Text Boundaries too, so when I uncheck it, it ALL goes away, not just the boundary lines, but the "L"'s too. The questions is, why are yours staying????

Yes, I did mean just restart the computer when I said reboot :)

    Post new topic ....

Did you go to help / repair? In case something is loopy?

Tried rebooting, still there. I know! They should all go away. That's why I'm so confused/irritated/frustrated/2.4 seconds from throwing my computer out the window.

Tried those two. No luck. There was nothing in the Startup add-ins folder. Renaming the template file didn't work.

I think I might just have to try and completely uninstall/reinstall. I tried just doing that from the control panel add/remove programs, but maybe if I completely remove it and then when I get home I can use the install disk to reinstall.

Did you try the repair ...thru the help tab?

Repair through the help tab worked. Thank you Tim, and thanks to everyone else who banged their head on the table with me.

They are margin marks or crop marks and you remove them as we have already identified... http://support.microsoft.com/kb/839371#appliesto ....but in Strider's case you don't, so it must be a M$ glitch

@Strider...you could try removing asian languages, as this link suggests.....

Never mind....I see you have it now! Good job :)

When you said do a repair installation, I went into Add/Remove programs and did it that way. That didn't work. It only worked after I did the repair in the help tab.

I was just goading TimW, no offence strider.

You can do the repair through add/remove also though.

You just check the repair/reinstall option.

    Don't matter now, it's fixed.
