MS Word

My PC is a Windows 98 SE, P3 1 GHz, 256 Ram, 80 Gb Hard Drive.

I have Word 2000. Whenever I try to run Word, it gets stuck on the splash screen, and the system suffers from a system resource crash. The result is that I have to restart my computer. Afterwards, Word still refuses to load. When I click on a file, the same happens. The only exception is when I open MS Works, and then go to the history, and then open a previous document - that is the only time Word opens.

I have looked everywhere on the Microsoft website but have been unable to find a solution to this problem. Any help would be appreciated.

 

happened to us too... the only thing I can recommend is try reinstalling it. Also, try repair as a last resort (repair never works anyway, usually)

 

ugh. reinstall? anything I can do short of that? what's the reason for the problem anyway (i don't want this to happen again)?

 

I have no clue what the reason is. The computer we had with that problem had so many other problems that we reinstalled the OP system. It worked after that. Reinstalling word isn't near as bad, it's easy, and it doesn't erase any of your documents, etc.

 

Can it read and write word docs? I need something that can do that and it is a lothe to install that old (*cough* possibly copied *cough*) version of word 97 and then upgrade it to 2000 with that upgrade cd someone gave us...

It has to be able to read and write word docs because I need to be able to carry the docs to school and send them to family (both places only have word)

typically when word hangs on the splash screen you have to delete the normal.dot file and let word recreate it.
