    hi all,
i have w2kpro sp4 and downloaded msconfig because 2000 does not have it, my question is this - does it work in w2k ?,
i have nero7 and wanted to stop nerocheck at boot-up so i opened msconfig, went to start up and unchecked the nero box, i got the message 'you must re-start your computer for the changes to take affect' so i re-booted, opened msconfig again and there was nerocheck, up and running still,
    any ideas ?

If you have Spybot S&D, you might try the the System Startup in the Tools section. I've had better luck making changes to the startup programs there than most anywhere else. The good part is that you can uncheck the item to disable it, then if you find that you would like to have it back, just recheck it.

    hi,
just re-booted and checked msconfig, nerocheck box is now blank but the second nerocheck box is ticked (only one the last time i looked) also spybot start-up says nerocheck.exe is disabled at start-up but the second nerocheck.exe is set to run at start-up (only had one 10mins ago)
anyone know whats going on before nerocheck takes over my system

The nero program is probably in the registry startup entry and will replace itself (similar to a virus) in the msconfig list even after it's unchecked. So- run regedit. Go to HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion and click on the Run, Run Once, and Run OnceEx and look in the right hand pane for the Nero program. If you see it, right-click it and choose Remove or Delete entry and click Yes/OK when it asks are you sure. Also check the same reg key under HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion. Do all this Safe Mode and before you reboot, make sure that the Nero prog is not checked in msconfig....

An easier, safer method (safer than editing the Registry) might be to open the Windows Services panel (Start > Run > type "services.msc" in the "Open:" box (no quotes), and click on the "OK" button.

When the Services panel opens, scroll down in the right pane until you find the entry for Nerocheck. Right-click it, and choose the "Properties" option. Find the "Startup type" box, and change the setting to Manual, then click on the OK button, and reboot your system. Once you get back to the Desktop, open the Services panel again to be sure that the Startup Type is still listed as Manual, and your problem should be resolved.

    hi,
i think i have it beat,
there are actually 4 (maybe a couple more) that i want to remove from start up, i was doing them one at a time, nerocheck was the first,

i have ad-aware pro installed with ad-watch, in my settings the start up is locked and on automatic, i unchecked these and stopped each start up with spybot and re-booted each time, not a problem.
on the last re-boot i re-set ad-watch to lock start up and re-booted again, checked services, msconfig, spybot, my hjt (just in case) and the registry, all are stopped at start up.

    thanks for your help
