I appear to have lost my msconfig file, I have no access whatsoever to it, not in the "run" command or anywhere else that I can think to look at. I have done a "repiar" thinkink that would help, but it still isn't there. Any suggestions?:(

    Try this:

Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixME.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.

Make sure that you tell me if you receive a success message about adding the above
to the registry. If you do not get a success message, it definitely did not work.

You can download the XP version from this link
    Code:
    http://www.techadvice.com/win2000/m/msconfig_w2k.htm
I had to do this because windows 2000 doesn't have it so I installed it on all my windows 2000 computers.

A big thank you to both plodr and Kestrel13! It is now working as good as ever. Thanks for the advice and your time to post an answer for me.

    Hi Kestrel13!,

Would this fix work with Vista Home Premium? Sorry to intrude but this looks like the answer I had been looking for! I have the same identical situation. My MSConfig became infected and was deleted while cleaning my system.

    Hi Kes,

Thanks for replying! The file merged with the registry successfully but MSConfig still won't run from the Start prompt. Possibly because there is no PCHealth folder in Windows?

I just did an advanced search and actually found 2 instances of msconfig.exe, both in C:\WINDOWS\WINSXS\X86. I'm not sure if that is where it should be. In any case it will not run from there. Any thoughts?
