Msconfig never keeps changes

Fellow geeks,

Despite using optimization software (Ontrack),constant defragging,etc., my system runs at 75%. I have a P3 with 512 mb SDRAM so if the system is properly setup it should run at a desent clip.

The main problem I see is the programs that start at boot up. I constantly go to msconfig and remove as many programs from boot up as possible, but the next time I boot up, the checks reappear next to the names.

If someone can give me some quick pointers, I'd be very grateful....

- What are the minimum programs that are required at boot-up? (I know System Tray is one, but what about Task Monitor and Scan Registry?)

- If the changes don't stick, can I go into Win Ini, System Ini, or the Registy itself?

- What causes the msconfig changes not to stick?

Hey, star ive found an alternative to TransText... it seems to be even smaller!

I use it on all the Win9x computers i set up. Only problem with it over TransText is you need to set it up to run at startup manaully
(with a little registry editing that can be fixed )
