You mean on the Startup tab of Mscconfig?

If it's not in your Startup folder (Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\) or in your All Users Startup folder (Windows\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\StartUp\), then it's still in your registry, even though the files referred to are gone. If THAT's the case, you need a good registry cleaner.

Look here for one if you don't have one.

(BTW, if you get a good Startup Manager (like StartupCPL, but get the Standalone exe Version (34 KB), not the Control Panel installation), it will tell you EXACTLY where the keys are that contain calls for old programs that you've uninstalled.)

Assuming that you are taking about items in the Startup Tab, you normally have to edit the registry and delete their info. Be careful if you are not familiar with editing the registry. Make sure you make a back up first. It may be easier for you to use a registry cleaning tool that may cleanup most of these dead links for you. You should check out one of the following:

    - RegCleaner 4.3.0.780 : freeware
    - RegSupreme 1.1.0.24 : shareware

Both can be downloaded here at majorgeeks.com in Registry area.

I would like to do it manually. I did it on my old computer but I just forgot how!

OK, so get the Startup manager, and it'll tell you where the entries ARE, then go into the registry and take them out. (But first check those two startup folders to make sure there's nothing there that's dead.)

    Back up first, etc.

You have gained much of my respect.

I always tip my hats to those who want to do it themselves, and learn how.

If they are startup items only, you will find most, if not all in one of these locations:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run (Most common)

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnceEx

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run (most common)

As Wisewiz said, msconfig should give you the path to where they are being loaded. But if not, these are places to check.

Make sure you backup any registry key you modify.

Edit: oops, didnt see you were using Windows 98. In that case, also "explore" your start menu and see if the startup folder is blank.

Thank you very much. You dont learn by letting something or somebody else do what you can learn to do............Bobby

msconfig for Win98 doesn't give registry paths, unfortunately, as you know.

That's why I suggested the manager--so he'd find out by using it exactly where to look for the deadwood in the reg. Kinda my way of helping him learn how to DO IT MANUALLY, rather than GIVING him the registry keys to look into.

I agree completely with you, Adrynalyne, as always. We just took different paths to the same end: helping him on the DIY road.

Admittedly, I didn't know that. I do now though :p
